Has Anyone Driven From LA to SF?

I'm going to be in SF area for a week or so and it would be great to have my own car to get around and explore.

Has anyone done the drive from LA to SF? I'm going to be alone and like driving so I'm thinking it won't be so bad.

I take the AMG every month or two down to LA from SF. Not a bad drive, will take about 6 hours from central LA. You'll certainly enjoy having the mbz in sf

Cops Cops and more Cops, enjoy the scenery, not the speed.

Its not that bad of a drive.

I do it monthly!

FYI - There is a pretty hairy dip-turns into a bump on I5-North on the right lane. Its about an hour south of Stockton. A friend hit it in his lowered E46 M3 and destroyed a tire/rim/skidplate.

Take Hwy 1, it will take you longer but you'll enjoy the scenery!

I commute weekly between Irvine and San Jose. It gets boring so I pop a movie in for parts of the ride, music the other, and speed at certain points. But yeah the drive is long and boring! 65 owners enjoy the burst of power.

I5 has some construction and will slow you down.

We go from Oceanside to the East Bay regularly. We take the 5 though, I've never taken the 101 north. Very easy drive... Just don't get tempted into races with all the idiots flying by.

Hwy 1 (pch) ftw you'll never realize how beautiful California's coastline is until you drive it!

I just took the 101 south from San Jose to LA/OC a couple weeks ago when I picked up my E55. Nice drive and well worth the extra hour or so versus the 5. If you have lots of time, then definitely take the 1 when you get north of San Luis Obispo!

Another option is to take 5 north out of LA and then cut west on 58 to get over to the 101. I heard this road is fantastic but I have not personally been on it for over 20 years.

Enjoy the ride...

Couldn't agree more. Stayed in Santa Monica for 3 days and went to a wedding in San Fran. To PCH from Malibu and stopped to see the Hearst Castle. Drove as much as i could until reached Carmel and stopped for the night. Sure are some very hairpin turns on PCH but overall very scenic drive.

Grew up in Hayward and I've been down the 1 a few times, but for the [my] purposes of arriving at the Bay, the 5 can't be beat lol.

3rd the motion very beautiful drive. Add your best girl to the passenger seat and some nice tunes and you might not want to get to your destination.

If you're going to speed get a radar detector. My wife got her first speeding ticket on hwy 1. First traffic ticket in her life. She drove for couple of hours because I was tired but they caught her doing 80 lol. Funny because i cautiously speed all the time and never got caught.

I'm always blown away on the CHP presence going up and over the Grapevine via 5. They are everywhere. The flat part of 5 is "fair".

I just got a V1 tonight, for this trip. What is the best mode to keep it on? I'm doing a drive from LA to SF on either the 101 or 5 freeway.

I'd rather get a good wash in Silicon Valley. Does anyone know a place around there?
