Damn supercharger pulley bolt won't come off.

I heated it up real good with a torch and it just laughs at my impact wrench. I'm using a rubber/nylon strap and it even broke the strap yet the bolt is still there...laughing.

Any way at all for me to lock the freaking supercharger and use my 3ft breaker bar on it?

I have it at the maximum which is about 110psi.

Do you think that the problem could be that the engine is still hot? I was using the car....should I let it cool down?

110psi should be fine. dont this engine heat should be a factor. just keep the impact wrench on for about 30 secs and it should loosen. if not try a stronger impact

I guess I'm going to have to find a stronger impact wrench. Mine is a pretty decent 1/2" that has snapped the heads of bolts before...guess maybe I should try a 3/4" inch?

sounds like you need more torque. get a 3/4" drive impact with at least 1200ft/lb of torque and you'll get it off. i have the Ingersoll Rand IR-2145QIMAX. works wonders on stubborn bolts

Hit it with some penetrating liquid first. I used sea foam deep creep and hit it with a Dewalt 18v impact wrench and it came right out.

Also, if you have a crappy extension (assuming you're using an extension; I did) it could be flexing, not allowing all of the impact to make it to the bolt.

I purchased an Ingersoll Rand 1/2" that said it could remove bolts that were tightened to 1,100lb-ft. It was the strongest impact I could find in my quest to find one today. I tried it and nothing...the bolt once again just laughed away.

I'm going to bypass the regulator on the compressor and fix some small leaks the compressor has and try again. If it doesn't work then I'll just take the tool back to where I bought it and order a big boy online and just wait it out.

At least I can drive the car without the SC....it just sucks.

Seriously? With a battery operated impact? Wow...my luck sucks!

I AM using a long extension....the radiator is kinda in the way so I can't use the impact wrench directly on the bolt. I'll try some new ideas tomorrow.

I sprayed a ton of penetrating oil tonight. We'll see what happens.

As a former Snap-On dealer, I may be able to offer some insight. 110psi measured at the compressor is a limiting factor. By the time the air gets to the gun, through the fittings and length of hose, the pressure is probably closer to 75 psi. As others have mentioned, any extensions absorbs shock from the impacts.
If you could get a tight fitting socket, no extensions or swivels, short hose and large fittings (inside diameter of the air chuck fitting), then hook it to a two stage compressor with 175 psi and viola, she will pop right off.
A 3/4 gun will require a ton more air than a 1/2 inch gun and may not perform any better on a small compressor.
Let us know how it goes.

Thanks, I'm going to try as many of these things as I can. The air is running through a regulator so I'll just bypass the regulator all together. I have some fittings that leak so I'll seal those up as well.

Do you think if I add a decent amount of oil to the gun it'll make it stronger by sealing better the chambers? I added only a tiny amount of very thin oil...maybe I should pour in motor oil?

My guess is the extension is your problem as others have said it can absorb a lot of the torque that your getting at the end. Is the extension built to be used with an impact gun or are you trying a typical chrome craftsman extension or what?

It's a typical chrome craftsman extension. About 12" long. I have shorter extensions but the freaking radiator is in the way.

How about a swivel? I'll be a lot shorter and still offer clearance.

It's really all about having enough air volume and psi going into the gun. When I was a Snap-On dealer, I would occasionally get mechanics complaining about poor air tool performance. I had a gauge that I put inline next to the air gun fitting so I could monitor air pressure at the gun when the trigger was squeezed. If you don't start with 160-175 psi, you won't have enough air pressure and especially volume, to get the tough bolts to come out.
If you have a local shop with a professional air compressor, you might consider dropping by, have them loosen the bolt and tighten it back up to get you home. Once it has been broken loose, you can get it off with your current set up.
To answer your question, the oil does help but it won't be enough to make a difference. More oil will simply blow out.

I'd give the swivel a shot if you can make that work. I bet that long extension is working like a torque stick. No matter how hard you twist one side, it will only transmit X amount of torque from an impact gun.

Yikes. 12 inch extension of any brand will severely decrease torque. You would be better off with an impact swivel than the chrome 12 inch. I have one you can borrow.

Thanks a lot really...I have one...I just didn't think about using it till now...lol. I'll give it a shot tomorrow.

Should I keep reheating the bolt? I've already done it about 3 times.

Mine was a SOB until I heated the crap out of the bolt with a torch, then it can off right away with a swivel bit and short extension.
That loctite takes a bit to melt
