Talk me OUT of an E55
New to the 'Benz world. Just bought my wife a 2011 C300 4matic and got bit by the bug.
Was looking through some of the models and feel the E55 is the one for me. So, with that said. Talk me out of it, why SHOULDNT I buy one?!
However if you want to answer some questions that would be awesome;O
1)Best year to own?
2)How well do the transmissions hold up?
3)What should I look out for used?

Haha, awesome. Wish I had the cake to go with something in the 100K range but not yet.
Overall you're happy with it?
I think most factory Nav sucks. The Nav in my wifes brand new C blows too.

Happy enough to keep me occupied until I can get a CL65, yes.

My car runs good and is a hoot to drive. Any of the E55 years will be pretty similar except for some minor cosmetic and tech changes. The real change was when they moved to the 6.2L w/ 7-speed tranny.

How expensive a repair bill can you stomach before you hate the car/can't afford the car/end up divorced? Can your budget support 15MPG and $1500 for tires every 15K miles?
Make sure you understand the airmatic suspension and its repair costs, the SBC brakes and their warranty/repair costs. Engine and transmission are solid if the car is stock - modified cars occasionally blow one or the other. Figure $5K for a good transmission rebuild and $10K for an engine. Low probability of incurring these kinds of cost, but it ain't cheap when it happens.

I'm mostly interested in how well the respond to mods, how reliable they are with them and what year is the best to mod..if any. I would be happy with mid 11's @ 118-122mph.

First - Just go drive one.
Then start shopping for one and get one as new as you can, with low milage. (warrenty will be a big plus)
Then start with the mods.
One way to talk you out of it - If you aren't handy with tools and able to do some work on it yourself, or you don't have someone that can work on it for you, get ready for the MB TAX -

Go out and drive one. There is one in the for sale in Pittsburgh that looks like a good deal !!!
WYSBERT: FS: 2005 E55, Pano, nav, xenon, 6cd, 50k
Ad is HERE.
It sits in the garage and I hardly drive it, that's why I am selling it.
Title is in hand, car is very clean. Link to more pics HERE.
$28k, 50k, obsidian black. Renntech stg1, Meistershaft exhaust.
Detailed pictures HERE.
Or try PINKNUTS, he is selling his with WARRANTY!! located in Missouri
Key is if you can find one with warranty for a year or two, that should be a winner. Get 05/06 if you.

The E55 is a mean machine, and has zero connection to your wife's new C300. I get one as a loaner when my car is in the shop and I can't believe it's from the same manufacturer as my E63.
Get an '06, we're almost at 2012 and even those cars are now six years old.

I wouldn't buy anything with 7 years 28k miles car. Mileage in this car has nothing to do. You should look into 50 - 60k miles car 05 06 about $28K
$34k asking price...... not worth it. IMO

It's close enough that I can go see it.
I would rather pay more for something that's mint then try to save a penny on something that's not. That's just me.
Not saying this car is mint but starting with low miles is "usually" a good start.

Mine is the 3rd. one, (AMG), and my all time favorite. Really going to miss this one when the warranty is up because I wouldnt own this car without one. Tried it on a previous one and the maintanence was the same as a new car payment.
