Widest tires on stock rims?
I currently have 265s on the rear.
I'm curious, what's the widest tires you can fit onto the stock rims? I have a 2006 E55.
Can you fit 275? 285?
Also, can you please post pics?
Thanks in advance folks!

How is the speedometer driven on these cars? Will going from a 265/35 to a 275/35 cause it to read a touch lower?
Also, if going to a 285, wouldn't a 285/30 give close to the same profile height as a 265/35?
My rear tires are about shot and if I could squeeze a little more rubber in there with my next set, that would be nice.

I might go with the 285/30 since my front tires are still good to go. I figure I will be going through tires at a 3:1 ratio rear:front. Thinking about that cost makes me want to cry a little.

Just bought a set of 285/30's for a whopping $144 each! Sumitomo HTR Z II. Probably not the best tire, but two of them for less than the price of a Michelin is hard to say no to.
If I don't like them, I can always sentence them to a smoky death by dyno mode.

Here is my concern and hopefully you all can help.
With the known airmatic/strut failures I'm worried that if it fails and the car drops, if my tires are too wide it could cause some damage. God forbid it happen while driving. Either way would be bad if the tire was too wide. Additionally, I wouldn't want my speedometer to be off either since I'm usually pushing the tolerable amount over the limit as it is.
With these things in mind, if I'm running the stock 245/40 18's on the front, what size would I be able to add to the rear and have the maximum width for extra traction and still have an accurate speedometer?
Not sure the width of my wheels since they were on the car when I bought it but they are BBS as opposed to stock.
As always, thanks in advance.

After my previous post I went to the BFG site and it sayd the stock sized tire (265/35 18) is 25.3" and the sizes mentioned by other members, 285/30 18 is 24.8" and they are an XL rated tire.
Anyone see anything wrong with going with this considering my comments on the previous post?
Surely 1/2" in diameter wouldn't make a noticeable difference in the speedo but I wasn't a math major by any means. LOL Thanks again

You need to be very concerned about width on a 285. It's not an automatic slam dunk. Each manufacturer has a slightly different sidewall shape, some are rounded and others are more square. That will make a difference in how the tire "tucks" into the wheel well as the car is lowered. Some guys have to roll the fenders to get clearance... You may end up rubbing and burning the paint on the fender lip.
You can play with wheel offsets, camber settings and specific tire manufacturers to get a combination that works...but it definitely takes effort. I didn't feel like taking that much time to figure it all out, so I went with a more conventional 275 width (Michelin PSS) and they work perfectly.
Diameters need to stay within 1 - 2% front to rear to avoid ESP issues. Visually, the 285s can also look too tall for the car....aesthetically speaking.

tire height calculator.. you can put in several sizes and compare to your stock size. It also tells you what % your speedo will be off. Cool calc. Good luck.

The only problem with that calculator is a 275/35/18 from one manufacturer won't typically be the same as a 275/85/18 from another manufacturer, or even a different tire from the same manufacturer! They are not built perfectly to size. Each manufacturer will have the exact specs for each tire and size on their website typically though. That's the best way to really know what your getting.

Bump. Got a flat on the way to work this morning. Going to order a set of hankook v12 evos. Is the consensus still that a 285/35/18 is going to be fine on the stock wheels? I'm not lowered yet but plan on doing it soon and just don't want any issues because I went with too wide of a tire.

a 265/35/18 pilot super sport is as wide as most 275/35/18 tires, you guys need to look at the full spec sheet of the tires your thinking of and go from there.
stock rolling diameter is 25.7 front and 25.3 rear so find tires that are close to that and your speedo and traction will be fine.
I ran a 26.x in the rear and got tc issue because the car thought it was spinning out at higher speeds on the highway and it blinked the tc on with 5% throttle.
if you want to run a big fat tire in the back to get more traction, move the front tire up a level to get the car closer to what it likes.
I wanted to run 285s in the rear but didnt because of fear of having the same issues again.

this is a great site to play with tire (and wheel) sizing...
