just going with the experts here... I know you always learn more after buying, just don't want to end up overpaying for a car already 6 years old.

You cant tell what options it has by now? It is obvious from the pic it has no pano, it does have distronic and it does have Parktronic. The interior options are just as easy to spot. Did you ask the selling dealer?

Dynamic seats are creepy and annoying.
Car also has tire pressure monitoring system. It's just about the age where the batteries in the sending units fail, so expect to spend significant $$$ to replace all four.

Tire pressure sensors, distronic and parktronic sensors will likely start failing one by one at a couple hundred bucks a pop (there's 8 I believe), power trunk likely will go, the dynamic seats have issues on lower mileage newer cars even, keyless go is full of issues.
These are all things that will add up very quickly when they start to go and you try to repair them.
I don't have dist/parktronic and I'm pretty happy about that. Same with the dynamic seats. I do miss out on making jokes about getting a massage while beating cars now though. I can check my own tire pressure easily, as well as close my own trunk.
All these features are awesome in their own way, but think about what it will cost to keep them all working. A car with less options Vs. a car with a few broken options will sell easier down the line I think.

If you're willing to pay $29k for that, I should sell you my 05 with 42k on it. I even have an extended warranty until August 2015/91k.

True story. Remember the age on these, also if you plan to drive a lot you'll be creeping near 100K in no time and even more junks gonna break.

I just bought my first E55 8 months ago and I looked for a car in the color I wanted with least number of options as possible. The car has a ton of standard features that crushed the corvette I was driving before I bought it. It is almost a 7 year old car now and there are soooo many things to go wrong with it.

I'm a bit torn on this thread to be honest, many of you say the car is crap - everything will break, yet others say just get it (maybe hiding the fact that it will break)
are the E55s really that prone to everything breaking? sounds like an old Subaru Justy!
if I get ANY used car, I will get a warranty - the one above will have 6-year and up to 125k - so I'd get 60k of warranty (milewise)

Something that most people don't take into account when buying an older AMG. These cars were close to $100K, when purchased new back in the day. And their more desirable now, because their cheaper than ever. But understand this, these cars still have an equivalent maintenance price equal to their price. Nothing is cheap on an AMG, and those that have owned one know this.

The used E55 market appears to be fragmenting into two different markets:
1. Low Mile, Long Remaining-Warranty Cars
2. High Mile, No Warranty Cars
If you can't get a warranty (or don't want to spend the money on it) then it makes sense to avoid fully-loaded cars with options that cost a fortune to fix..... unless you don't mind driving a car with a bunch of broken stuff in it, and can pick it up cheaply.
If the car is a low-mile car with a good, quality warranty then most of the issues listed above will be repaired for free (or after a small deductible) anyway. You'll pay more for the car, but you'll get more of the luxury items that IMHO give the car the "whole package" appeal.
Personally, I prefer a used car that still feels new... low mileage, no visible wear, no door dings or curb-rashed wheels. As time goes on, you're going to have a harder time finding E55s that aren't "used up" and battered.
I'm not sure what the market is going to be for heavily modded cars with over 100K on the odometer.... but with no hope of a warranty, I'm guessing they're going to be relatively cheap to buy, but will end up bought-and-sold a lot as people who buy them get bankrupted by the repair costs if something major goes wrong (engine/trans/etc).
Again, this is just my opinion but I'd be looking for the nicest car you can afford with the lowest mileage and best warranty. Drive it, and enjoy it fully....and when it's finally time to sell it, you should still have a car that looks and drives better than 85 - 90% of the other E55s out there, and that should allow you to find a buyer easily.

Out Of Control!!
This may not be the car for you... you are looking for someone to spoon feed you all the information... read every thread in this section... and make your own decisions. no disrespect to your Mazda but any German car that is fun to drive is going to need care unlike your mazda... Gassing up and going isnt really an option in any of them... they are high maintenance cars. And you may be ok with it breaking cause you will have a warranty... but are you going to be ok being with out a car while its getting repaired?
More than likely it will always want or need something
