Hi all,
Have a SL55 AMG, modified, will be running circa 600hp over the summer.
I know 0w40 Mobil 1 is the stock oil choice but the car gets driven very hard and will be visiting nurburg, santa pod & various circuits. It's only a weekend car but gets driven hard.
I want a slightly higher viscocity at operating temp to protect the engine due to driving style so was considering a 0w50 or 5w50, Mobil 1 make a 0w50 but it's hard to get here. I can get 5w50 Valvoline VR1 Fully Syn off the shelf for around £80.00 a gallon.
Just wanted to see if anyone is running higher viscoity oils than stock in there 55 AMG.
Let me know your thoughts, the Valvoline VR1 is run in quite a few top end cars like M5/M6 etc.
Cheers all,
Toby

2003 E55 AMG
A 9hp increase in a back to back dyno would be more likely due to other variables other than oil. I routinely see variences greater than that with no changes at all. To keep the topic on track, the oem oil will be fine, just shorten your oil change interval.

Mobil 1 stock all the way I say. If you are that worried about it, do what race teams do. Change it constantly. Perhaps couple times a day if that will make your more comfortable. I think it's a waste personally. You got guys in Ferrari and Lambos going coast to coast flat out in outlaw runs using Mobil1 and they run just fine.
Oh and prepare at the end of the day for your new rotor color.
Swear to you, it will look like this after it glows red on the track.

Mobil 1 0W40 is more than you need for racing and street.
If the car has no cats then Mobil 1 0W50 racing.
