I removed my CD changer because it was giving me issues and when I removed it I pulled the fiber optics by mistake and broke one. I said "screw it" since I really don't use it and just put everything back on. Now my radio turns on and then just turns off again, seriously? Does the radio REQUIRE the CD changer to work? If not, what can I do? I have an SDS just in case.

No seriously the fiber loop needs to be closed in order for everything on that circuit to work. I don't know where we get them from but we do have a fiber optic bridge at work that we use to test. Google it hard enough u might be able to find one. Hope this helps

Does the NAV DVD control unit also run this way? I want to remove it since I have no use for it and I may as well sell it. Will unplugging it also cause my radio to go haywire?

Good luck with the fix, I hate the whole fiber optic thing since I had to take the E500 to get TeleAid removed by the dealer as it was not in use and malfunctioning. I guess it's not too bad but the electronics in this car are so complicated you can't even take out a CD changer without issue

The whole system runs in a loop and if you remove the cd changer, the loop has an interruption. They do sell a cable that you can reconnect the loop.

^ The car does NOT need coding. You just need to close the loop.
Find the fibre cable and open up the end connector (you should see 2 orange fibre lines, one white, one red). Open that connector with a thin screwdriver. You now have 2 lines, with 2 ends. Now you just need to join them end-to-end.
The part # you need is 000-545-33-84. "Connector"
Once done, you just need to tuck everything through the hole in the side of the glove box. Be sure not to bend the fiber too sharply or you will break the cables. The minimum radius is 0.25" or about 6.5mm iirc.

I got it to work...quick, cheap, simple. I removed each fiber from the plug ( they are just clipped on ) and with a small piece of rubber vacuum hose I shoved both fibers in, one on each end, until they touched each other. Problem solved, it works flawlessly and was a free fix for me ( I already had the hose ). Thanks guys.
