Upgrading E55 to CLS55
I wanna sell my car for a CLS55 but I'm also tired of driving a stock car so it will probably receive some good mods. Thing is I haven't seen one 10 sec CLS55. I know they're not as aerodynamic and weigh more but it does put me off buying one because if I'm gonna start tuning a car I obviously want results. So what's the verdict on the CLS55 guys, how hard would it be to get a mid 10 (on radials) out of them...

(1) Big pulley
(2) Fuel rail + injectors
(3) Race gas tune
(4) Drag rims & radials
(5) Killer chiller + split reservoir in trunk
(6) LTH
(7) Large throttle body
(8) Good driver
(9) Lose weight

Not impossible.
With full weight, spare tire, worn out street tires and almost full gas tank, I ran a 12.3 @ 114mph at Moroso with an ECU tune (no pulley). This was in hot and humid south Florida weather. It might have a little more in it if the weather was cool and dry.
Car dyno'd at 444whp and 484wtq on a Dynojet with just the ECU tune.
This is very close to what E55's are running in the heat and humidity down here. I expect to see 11's very soon with a RennTech 168.

the CLS and E class have always been compared to one another, not an upgrade my man. an upgrade from an E class AMG is an S-CL-SL not a CLS. and i thought the CLS was just a bit lighter than the w211 55?

But the way it looks guys, it's a seriously good looking car. Pictures just don't do it justice, trust me on that. When you see one for real though it just stands out from the crowd and looks so different to other cars. God I wish weight saving wasn't so expensive

I too used to think the CLS was a lot heavier, but it actually isnt really any heavier than the E..Take a look at this thread, the CLS is 4200 without driver which is not bad at all

That's because stock for stock the E gets better traction then the CLS. I'm going to be doing the KW Coil overs and some drag radials on the CLS and see what happens

It's heavier and less aerodynamic though, that stuff hurts the speed it's inevitable. By the way I thought due to the CLS having wider tires it launches better than the E55. All in all the E55 is definitely faster mod for mod.

Mod for mod its the same set up, however the E hooks up better even though the CLS has a wider tire and that why the E get better times in the .25 mile

you bench racing or have you driven both?
Few points to take into consideration
bottom Line way more E's out there that race and drag their cars
people with the CLS's generally tend to focus on looks (i.e spoilers, big flashy heavy wheels, which hurt performance)
I know this is opinion, but if you take both E & CLS 55k variants and put them side by side, the E has aged, while the CLS is still unique in looks. You will need to face lift the E to even consider it
go look for the Top gear cls 55 video
Few points to take into consideration
- The cls will have all the updated parts that not all E's have, as its a 2006 model ( you would be surprised as to how much this amounts for)
- The steering rack gives a much better steering feel, only available in later 2006 E55 models
- Wider tier set ups available with 10-11 inch rears fitting easily
- The CLS has the better interior and materials used
- Comes with optional AMG goodies like the M1/M2 manual shift modes from AMG factory (optional), LSD, 2 peace rotors, speed delimit and a few other things
- Stock for stock the E pails in the sound department, the CLS sounds way more aggressive
bottom Line way more E's out there that race and drag their cars

The E without pano can save 80Lbs ! I think Steve amgrocket 55 is fully equipped with Pano and runs 10.5 or 10.6 But seriously, CLS55 is a very stand out car and it runs 11's with some mods. What else more you can ask ! Plus, they are about $30K today compare to new $100k fully equipped.

If I had $50K 3 years ago i would pick up the CLS instead of my E $35K. The CLS55 was still very expensive 3 years ago.

I've seen the Top Gear CLS55 video and just makes it more tempting. Very controllable through the corners, the E55 might be faster on the straights but the CLS is a much stiffer and better handling chassis.

Wow, with all this CLS love I have to be the bad guy I can't stand them, I think they're hideous! Now that's just my opinion, if you like you should get it pho sho.

CLS is definitely an upgrade over the E. the interior alone feels like a 100k car compared to the OK interior in the E. CLS has insane road presence, it's been out for 6 years and still turns heads everywhere. E class, not so much. CLS has timeless styling, it was well ahead of it's time when it was released. To this day I have people asking me if my car is brand new because the styling has not aged nearly as much as the E class has.
