My friend was going to do his oil then realized he bought the wrong stuff and gave it to me to see if I could use it. It is Mobil 1 0W-30 and it says advanced fuel economy formula or something or other. Would I be able to run this stuff? I went ahead and bought an oil filter (fram ch8481) too. If the stuff works i plan on doing this myself.

AMG recommends using 0W-40 or 5W-40. 0-30W is a bit thin for my taste unless you are in a very cold climate. As far as the filter you should be using a fleece filter like Mann vs the cheapo Fram filters.

Just my opinion but is it really worth risking damage to your engine to save $80??

Anybody have a part number for a mann filter?

Edit: Mann has no filter for the E55 but they do for other 2003 55 AMG models, would these work the same?

The 0W-30 will flow better at low temps and provide more lubrication. For normal driving, it should be ok. Actually, it would be better and the engine would run smoother.

If you are going to have the engine running at high temps regularly then go for a more viscous oil.

Bad advice....

The recommended viscosity is 0w-40, so the cold viscosity is 0W, which will flow great, but you need the oil to have a higher viscosity at operating temperatures or you could have issues with your bearings and rings......

Can you provide more explanation to that.

Based on my knowledge, the 0W 30 and 0W 40 don't flow the same at low temps. And even at high temps the 0W 30 will flow better and shall provide better lubrication. 0W 40 will only be a better choice if the car is to be driven at well above normal temps for a fairly long intervals of time.

0w-30 and 0w-40 have the same viscosity in cold temps. At operating temperatures, the 40w will be more viscous. On a high powered supercharged car, a thicker oil within the design specs is definitely a good idea. Not to mention that M1 0w-30 is already thin for a 30wt oil, when you add some fuel dilution and shear, you end up with a very thin oil.

I have seen 3 different answers from the search bar, so can anybody tell me just how many quarts I'll need? I have seen 6,7, and 8 quarts being suggested.

Just buy a OEM filter, it's $12-$20. 0w-40 is $6.49 at Wal-Mart. I change my oil every 3000-3500 miles

I will be buying an oem filter from my (not so local) Dealer. How many courts do you usually use and do you do it your self? I know theres 2 drain plugs so I am planning on draining those one at a time, throwing those back in, then putting 5 quarts in and keep checking oil level from the menu where you access dyno mode, adding more as necessary.

You guys are missing the big picture here. The weight is NOT the most important factor with synthetic oil. THE most crucial thing is the additive package. That is why some oils are MB approved and some are not. Take a look on the back of the bottle to see the application.

PS: 0-30, and 0-40 will BOTH flow at the same cold rate.

Buy 9 quarts of oil, 8.5 is how much goes into the engine. Save the half a quart for topping off if needed.

Not your motor, your warrantee. The film strength of these synthetics are all very good. If someone had put 0W-30 in my engine, I would probably change It out after 5k.

That said, I use the the 0W-40.

I know it's allready been established how bad the cheap aftermarket filters are but thought I would share my experience. Working at a dealer I have changed a lot of oil on 112-113 engines. Only use Mann (mb oem supplier) or mb, all others your raking a risk and for what? To save $5? I have pulled filters out of the cars and the filter media literly had fallen apart (fram etc.) and been pumped through the engine and guess what, those were usally the cars with lifter noise and oil consumption. Use only Mobil 1 0-40 or 5-40 formula m or ESP formula m. It will say on the bottle that it meets mb 229.51 spec. Other brands out there will meet spec as well just not sure which ones right now

Are the fram filters just junk for the E55? A lot of my friends use fram and have had no problems, but seems like all the E55s that use Fram are bound to be screwed up..

They are all junk period! No matter the vehicle use oem, Mann, Hengst, wix, Bosch or Mobil in my opinion. Oem is best though because you know what you are getting. By the way all 112 and 113 v6's and v8's (excluding slk55) use the same filter.
