E55 Resonator/2nd Cat delete vs Muffler delete

I wanna make the car louder! Which is louder? any pitfalls to deleting the mufflers? I cant seem to find any good quality videos of the muffler deletes.

Opinions please!

Muffler delete is much louder.
But muffler delete causes cabin drone.

I got 2nd cat delete only. Oem from resonator back. No link pipe. Sounds the bananas to me. Quiet enough on a light throttle and pretty fierce when you give it some welly.

Fierce enough for me anyway. I would love to be able to replicate the SLR sound ... that to me would be 1st prize.

I want to do the resonator delete, but I a lot of the vids I've seen sound like a boat or blatty.

I'd much rather run the Supersprint muffler-back, but that's crazy money.

The following will add substancial sound. Number 3 being the cheapest way.

1. Longtube headers without cats
2. Aftermarket mufflers
3. Deletion of mufflers, this will produce a poping sound when you let off the gas at high rpms
4. Cut open and gut the OEM mufflers

I'm all for number one on Shardul's list

The cleanest sound I have heard is headers --> OEM Resonator --> C63 mufflers. That is as close to perfect as I can imagine.

Is there a way to introduce the popping sound to an exhaust that has 2ndary cat delete, resonator, and x pipe?

I think if you add the EC mufflers, Magnaflows or gut the OEMs you might get that popping sound.

I had my mufflers cut out and added a j-pipe to get rid of the drone. Its otherwise stock. It really sounds great in my opinion and was very inexpensive to do. Its not too loud at all since I still have my cats and resonator in place. It has a slight rumble to it at idle, its subdued at cruise. when you get on it it opens up and sounds fantastic. It does pop a bit on deleration but its only a slight pop at certain rpms. To me, it sounds exactly how a european V8 should sound. It sounds nothing like my camaro which is what I wanted to avoid.

Unfortunately I don't have any video of it.

you basically tee off a 28-30 inch dead end where each muffler used to be. The soundwaves bounce off the dead end and come back down the pipe and cancel out the droning frequencies. They are very effective. Solo Performance exhaust makes the for the Pontiac G8. I just had my shop fab them. I had him curl the extension up under the rear fenders in place of the mufflers. do a google search for Solo j-pipe or Helmholtz resonator. There is tons of info out there on them.

This is similar to what mine looks like:

You may need to play with the length of the j-pipe. The length changes which frequencies get cancelled out. I found that anything between 28-30 inches long worked pretty well. The droning is completely gone now. It used to make my ears bleed between 1800-2200 rpm which is pretty much where the car likes to sit while cruising.

Here is my SL with secondary delete only. I do have shorty headers and I think the SL exhaust is a bit different too. Maybe a useless comparison.
