I am assuming that fuel came in to contact with the insulation and dried up and caused it to stick...
Right after fueling and driving home
This is REALLY getting old.. I always make it a mental note not to fill up past 3/4 to avoid this and I guess that wont cut it anymore.. I'd better get used to driving around at a half tank...

Dig up that email or contact info for the NHTSA guys looking into this. Mercedes wants to say this is IMPOSSIBLE well here you go, come look at the impossible!
The fuel is probably wicking through the gasket cause its getting soaked from a steady leak and soaking into the matting. Whatever glue held the matting together is melting from the gasoline (amazing solvent) and making it stick at the bottom. <---my theory.
Get a hold of NHTSA on this ASAP though. Benz specifically said this was impossible.

This is pretty serious leakage going on here. I would take to the dealer with copy of the class action docs and the 2008 recall and at least get the sending units replaced for now or whatever parts are causing this leak. I def wouldnt be driving around with this and inhaling fumes!!!

I sent you a PM regarding a email contact at NHTSA

Wow, that sucks! I bet the fumes knock you out when you open the door. I know a guy that had a front end accident in his e55 and whole car smelled like gas from that seal/pump leaking.

Damn, that's bad. I only have the gas smell when I overfill the tank. Since then I've always stop when the pump stops, no problem since.
I've always tell myself that one day I'll open the unit up to see what's wrong with it, but never get around to it.

That is a ticking time bomb right there. Take the suite, pics, and recall to the dealer, and speak to the service manager, hand him everything.

Remove access panel under the seat and inspect after you fill up
It takes ten minutes

Here is the potential solution for this problem, unless ordered by Fed to have MB to force a recall.

i had this issue when i first bought my car. i ended up buying a new o-ring seal (old one was saturated and warped from gas) and ended up spending around 10 minutes muscling the seal in(which is a pain to get positioned correctly) and retightening the plastic ring down tight. fixed my problem...
it would not suprise me if a dealer tech messed this up and didnt realize it.

Forgot to highlight, hope you don't smoke.....
So based on the pictures above, I can only imagine 4 possible areas could cause a leak, where is the actual leak coming out from?
(a) Big O thinggy
(b) is it a vent pipe in the middle where it's connected to L elbow outlet?
(c) one of the connector?

His age is of no importance to this thread. He has a right to complain like anyone else. Just give him a chance man.

Unbeknowst to you, i sent him a pm directing him how to carefully word his complaint to the NHTSA and only because he probably has the best pictures out of anyone that clearly illustrates the problem and will no doubt raise eyebrows as well as a MB Engineer's Lieberhosen. This could definitely play into our hand.

That sucks. I'm so glad I don't have this problem. Hope MB owns up and issues a full-blown recall campaign before E55s start exploding like Ford Pintos used to :-(

No harm done, I understand him completely. No person wants to hear a 17 yo ***** about a problem on a car they them selves couldn't own. But then again, doesn't matter who complains, as long as they have a reason to.
Agreed, there are only few techs are there really pay attention to details.

Don't worry. I don't see it as hating, I see it as constructive thinking. But, what ever it takes, let me know how I can help. I am here for the long haul, if it means getting all these W211's FIXED, not DELAYED

I have a feeling this may be the straw that finally breaks Merceds' camels back if NHTSA presents it to them.
