0-60 / Quarter Mile Launch Preferences?

Hey guys, I did a search and went through the pages skimming through the topics... The search pulled up basically everything E55 related and the 0-60 pulled up all the MBs topics throughout the board... So sorry if this has been discussed, but basically I am curious what the best way to launch the car to get a good 1/4 mile time? Comfort mode/sport mode/manual mode, traction control on/off? What seems to work the best? Thanks, guys!

There is a good sticky, and you will find everyone has a different preference.

I know Lowprofile has put down 1.5X 60', so he would be a credible source. My best 60' was 1.6

Suspension Comfort
Trans - Sport
Raised (Yes, All the way up)

I have tried all combinations, and this works best for me. My drag set up rubs a little from a hard dig, so the raised suspension gets me out of the hole, and allows a little better weight transfer. If you are not lowered, this probably does not need to be done.

Okay, cool. Thanks.

Stock height, not lowered. Traction control on or off?

I turn off traction control for Burn out box, and then try to remember to turn it back on for the run.

When you hook up, it really doesn't matter- When you are about 100' down the track and go sideways, its another story. My best runs have always been with traction control on. Here again, opinions will vary.

Where are you going for your runs? Let us know how you do!!

Power brake, send smoke to the moon, nobody will care about your 1/4 times after that. LOL. Seriously, traction off seems best. Some turn on dyno mode, yet a few others have run the same time either way. All comes down to your style.

Well I am originally from Southern CA and had quite a few places I went with my WS6 and Corvette. Since I have been in AZ, September 2009, all I have had was my 2002 Passat and 2006 Passat lol Well... and my Ducati, but I never drag raced my motorcycles. So I am actually looking for some good places to go. I know that Firebird Raceway has stuff going on sometimes, I'll have to look into it.

I had gotten pretty comfortable in my '96 WS6 to where I had gotten it down to 13.59 with just 3:73s, which I thought was pretty good because a lot of the other jack offs (my buddies) were only pulling 13.5s/13.4s in their LS1 Fbodys. I planned on running this car stock with just the Eurocharged tune and then doing it again after I get the TB, pulley, headers etc upgrades. To be honest, I'm a little more hesitant to drag this car as opposed to the TA and Vette.

Forum members head to Famosa every so often, hopefully there will be another event shortly when the temps are cooler.

for the 1/4 i prefer to leave the car at stock ride height. was able to match my "raised" 60ft. and picked up about 1mph, as the car, at least on an e63, lowers itself back down at 75mph, and i've read and belive it hesitates a tad when doing so, plus the possible but maybe negligible difference in aerodynamics? but i ran my best time all in all so far with standard suspension, sport trans, regular ride height, TC off

I managed a 1.76 on the set up above with street tires, but with ESP off (R230 though). Maybe there are just too many variables to really nail down the best launch set up. I always wonder just how many times the brakes may have stabbed at the wheels even with traction control off. It seems dyno mode would be best, but I have never done it. I am just a bit worried about shutting down the beast with no ABS.

I too have read there is hesitation when it lowers, and mine comes down at 80... But non-the less, I never detected any loss of power around the 80MPH mark, and I log every run.

PB IS 11.42, but that was forever ago (2010).. I need some real track time, I really hope we get a Famoso run in this year!!!! (MO!!!)

I need to get off page 2 at Drag Times!!

Not Stock- At that time, I had a 180mm Pulley, PLM Shorty Headers, and 82mm TB (I think) - Stock exhaust with all cats

That's about it

My buddy at my dealership was a MB tech and he said he'll hook me up and do my TB, and pulley but won't touch my LTH lol... Guess I'll need to find a decent shop :P I need to be in the 11s.

Just to add to the good advise already....practice, practice, practice. Start off launching on the conservative side and slowly get more aggressive. You have some experience at the track already and I'm sure you will do fine.

Does the car put down more 'power' in S mode, or is it just quicker gearshifts? Mine feels faster in S, but I'm not sure if it's placebo.

Turn traction control off (I use dyno mode) raise suspension up to. Press the brake hard and give it a little as to help raise the rear up a little more while holding the brake then let back off the throttle. Then roll into the throttle. The last part depends on your tires and how it hooks up for you. I've cut 1.60's on street tires but like Lowprofile said Practice practice practice.

What's the optimal RPM to shift between gears? 6300?

I'm not sure about everyone else, but I put the tranny in "D" and let it do the shifting. Slamming up against the rev limiter is no fun.

agreed, I go through i think 4th gear to finish a run, thats 3 opportunities to screw it up in a fraction of a second. I know the transmissions "adapt", but i'd have trouble thinking that even after a slow poke period of driving, if you put it to the floor and asked for it, it wouldn't rev pretty high for you through the changes.

Either way, I gave up on trying to out-shift the car the first time I hit the rev limiter, I know the tach lags a bit as well, so who knows where they are actually shifting based on the gauge alone
