The 2003 E55s are now 10 model years old.... you typically can't even find a company willing to warranty a car older than 7 years. Even a 2006 will be hard to get a warranty for now.
My guess is that there are now PLENTY of people with expired warranties, but the smart ones are holding cash in reserve for expensive repairs.

I've said it in the past and I'll say it again - I bought my car without warrenty, and I didn't purchase aftermarket warrenty.
A lot of people hype up the need for warrenty - Well I have my car for three years, and I bring it to my local MB dealer for regular fluid changes, and I have a MB tech that does the service and while the car is there he'll do a computer scan and see if it needs any additional repairs, then I'll coordinate the repairs (on the side). Good for him good for me. In short - Make a friend with an MB tech.
Let's face it if you own a $90k car, you better plan to spend money on repairs, either out of pocket, or warrenty and the warrenties are not cheap.

No warranty for me either. But I do all the work on the car myself. With all the resources from this forum, help of the members and Star DAS the car is not hard to work on at all!

I bought mine without one over a year ago and was stressing for 3 months about buying a extended warranty. After doing minor repairs on the car myself with the help of this forum I could not justify the cost. I found a independent tech that knows our motors well but have only needed to have the valve cover gaskets replaced. At the end of the day it is just a V8 and not much different compared to domestic V8 motors when it comes to the mechanics. Now the electronics, that is a entirely different subject that scares the crap out of me....

I bought my car 3.5 years ago with Chrysler ext. warranty. Only use once and it has to be done in dealer. Forget the warranty, waste of money. If they don't approve you are screw. I rather have the money in my own pocket fix it when and where I like it. Plus, the warranty for E55 is about $4K. You actually can do a lot of repair with $4K.

I never had a warranty. Owned the vehicle for approaching a year now and have added only about 5500 miles. I can do most anything on my own or throw a few beers or bucks at a friend and I have access to a shop with a lift if needed. The more I look at these cars the simpler they seem. The only weird area is with the computers and if becomes an issue I'll find someone in my area with STAR or I'll get my own copy.
If you know how to turn wrenches these cars are the best value going right now in my opinion.

I love working on cars so I fix everything myself, no warranty for me. Pearlpower is crazy though...I would never want my car to break, I just want to keep modifying it...lol

No warranty here either for my 06. I do all my own maintenance and repairs. It is not a hard car to work on. If you can DIY, it is about the same as many other cars. You just have to shop for parts. Fortunately I have not needed the star diagnostic. When I do, I will purchase the software. I have gt5 for bmws'. Too bad It does me no good for the Merc.

Not to hijack your thread but I have been wrestling over purchasing a warranty as well. I just bought a 2006 with 70k miles. Haven't even received the car yet as its being shipped. I have been planning to purchase a warranty for any e55 I was looking to buy. I can get a full coverage policy of 3yr 36k but it cost 4300. I just don't know if I can stand to pay that much for a warranty that I might not use much. I will probably drive the car 10k a year or less. The car hasn't had any major issues for the previous owner but they didn't drive it that many miles. I'm tempted to just put that 4k in saving for repairs. I don't sweat the small stuff but major engine trouble or some of the electronics do scare me with the car. I had a c36 I bought off of ebay years ago without an inspection and it ate me alive. In two years I spent 10k on that car and it wasn't supercharged. It had definitely been treated rough though. I had a ppi done on the car I bought and it came out great except needs brakes and rotors soon.
On a brighter note. I can't wait to get this car. I am used to fwd turbo cars with the torque steer and all. Rear wheel drive is going to be awesome. I have only driven a 2003 stocker that had over 130k miles and loved the power that car had.

The drivetrain on these cars is way overbuilt. You won't have issues unless you are modding to the max.
If you work on the car yourself, the warranty will be pointless.
Your ownership costs will depend on how fussy you are about the "little stuff" being perfect too. I really obsess over everything being perfect so I seem to spend quite a bit of money replacing small items (flaking door handle chrome, cracked walnut trim, small exterior bits, etc)
It's a wonderful car, but the costs will largely be a function of how you want to use it, and how obsessed you get about the smaller items.

When my Axle boot had a tiny rip in it, and Mercedes wouldn't change it under CPO warranty, I canceled the extra $4k cpo extended warranty I paid when I bought the car, and took it to an indy shop and replaced just the boot for $500 including labor.
Mercedes wanted to change my whole axle as they don't sell just the boot, for $2000!!!!

I currently own an 03 Amge55 with 50k miles on it and purchased an extended warranty.....they covered the car under warranty for a few minor repairs until I had a broken ring in #8 cyl, then all he'll broke loose.
The MB Dealership said that I needed a new motor, needless to say the warranty company did not want to hear this....to put it mildly I had to go through a lot of hoops and hurdles for month together them to pay for the repairs.
After the warranty ran out I got another warranty with another company who claimed that they would stand by any claim.
After a year I made a claim on a tranny....what I did not know that they all is in league with each other.
They denied my claim because I was running 19" tires on the car.
They said that those were not OEM wheels ,cancelled my claim and took 25 percent of my money.
So just be careful with which warranty company you go with...they are all a bunch of thieves.
