I suppose I could just say read the title and leave me alone That's not me. The car is shifting perfect at WOT with the 3.55's. In fact all of the car's shifts are great. No check engine lights. 3.55's may be more aggressive than a lot of you are ready for, I don't mean you can't handle it I mean it's hardly a "Mercedes" anymore If you're going to run gears just not up and get some ET Streets for around town, or consider yourself driving a car with a 3 speed transmission. Jerry busted his *** getting this dialed in and working right, we're talking insane dedication! I'm going to be running at Shift S3ctor's Airstrip Attack 1/2 mile with a roll event tomorrow in Coalinga, I'll let you all know how everything goes.

Hopefully in a few weeks, till have to see if the 4th gear shift is worth the gains down the strip. Now on the street it's worth it!

It's pretty ridiculous, we'll have to meet up. Hopefully this weather will hold out.

Thinking the same on the extra shift. Curious how this turns out, but for street use, wow, LSD and some nice tires would be a must. Thanks for the update.

I've been reading gear related stuff here for a while and how excited some of the members with "Fanatic" titles get.

I'm really really curious

Anyone patient enough to explain me what is happening and what you all are talking about and what those numbers mean 3.55 , 3.75 and all ?

Thanks in advance

The number defines how many times the driveshaft is spun for 1 tire revolution. 3.55 to 1 for instance.

I've been wanting to do this for so long but didnt want to be the test rat. I can't wait to see how it does in the 1/4. My earlier thinking was that if I was able to cut 1.50's 60ft then I would stick with the stock rear gear ratio until I felt it was needed to change them.

I'm right there with you, I'm not sure it's going to add up to real gains at the strip. On the street it's lots of fun. We'll see if shrinking the rpm band the car sits in while it's accelerating under wot will make up some of the lost time shifting into 4th.

I honestly dont see how it would hurt performance at all. That car must pull so hard mang I would opt for 3.23 gear based on what suites my combo best. I am thinking that coupled with a 3000 stall would be viscious out the hole.

Sweet! What is the stock final drive? Way back when i had an 88 mustang gt. Ran 14.8 with 2.73 gears, with 3.73 and new mufflers it ran 13.9. Gears made a huge difference for me back then, would love to see what they can do for the e55!

so it spins 3.55 times in 1 revolution , what's our stock ? and how does this help go car fast?

If the number is higher does it mean that a car can handle lots more horsepower because driveshaft shifts more times compared to before ?

How's 2nd gear traction? My car has great 2nd gear traction with my Hankook R-S3's out back but I fear going this aggressive will make my 2nd gear just as useless as my first gear...lol.

Also, where do you get the gears from and how much does this cost?

Basically, the higher the drive ratio, the more acceleration you'll gain, as well as a loss of top speed. So a stock E55 does what, 52 at 6200 rpms in first before shifting? Using taller gears would aid acceleration, but you'd only be going (for example) 47 at 6200 rpms in first. Hope that clarifies it for you

The output of the transmission spins 3.55 time and the wheel will spin once. The stock is 2.65. The number has nothing to do whatsoever with how much horsepower the car can handle.

I'm running 265/40/18 MT ET Streets II and it doesn't spin any of second. Of course it's not comparable running even the best street tires to running MT's. The gears are made by Richmond Gears and they're for Chargers and Challengers that have a 215mm ring gear in the diff. You can get them for around 550.00 a set. They also make 3.23 if you want something less aggressive.

I've always though 2nd and especially 3rd gear to be way to long on the 2.65 but this sounds like a great upgrade. Big thumbs up!

Transmission spins more faster and the wheel spin rate will remain the same.

How does that benefit us ? Does it help reducing wheel spin and putting more power to the ground ? I mean how exactly is there acceleration gain ? or each gear would have more power available across the rpm band ??

I'm sorry if I'm testing your patience limit but I am just trying to understand what exactly is there which made all of you so happy and I can't even understand

You're inputting more power from the engine into 1 revolution of the tire. The same way pulleys allow you use less energy over a longer period of time to move the same amount of weight. Let's say your transmission is in 4th gear, that's 1 to 1 in our transmissions, on a stock car the engine is going to spin 2.65 times and the wheel is going to spin once, on mine the engine is going to spin 3.55 times and the wheel is going to spin once. You're engine obviously makes more power in 3.55 revolutions then it does in 2.65 revolutions, so you gain some mechanical power from the gears.

Great link Suicidal! Explains it perfectly, and showed me I got tall gears and short gears mixed up
