ECU tune too rich smell burning

Last Friday when I went to do my A service my mechanic told me that my car has burning smell after aggressive drive. According to him, my ECU tune is too rich. Kleemann told me my tune is good for up to 172m pulley so my question is will smaller SC pulley increase boost could fix this problem ? My mech told me it would balance it so will burn out the excess fuel. I just want your guys opinion. If that's true means I don't need a tune when I install SC pulley ?

Thanks for any advice.

You need to put a AFR gauge on it to see what how rich it is or if its rich at all.

Thanks for the quick response. I will ask my guy to install a Afr gauge. Also will email to Cory about his opinion.

A larger pulley MIGHT work, but you engine has a map sensor that will see the additional pressure and just add even more fuel. Try it and find out.

I am thinking to install the smaller SC pulley since I am scared of Crank pulley bad installation. I remember the SC pulley will increase the boost. Just not sure how much boost will increase.

Never ever try to fix a tuning issue by trying to put parts on to make up for the tune. Without data who know where in the RPM band it's running rich or by how much, you could easily fix a rich spot in the band with the pulley and then run lean somewhere else and blow your motor up.

When I got my kleeman tune for my headers they told me they gave me a stage II with the boost maps already in place so if I ever wanted to raise the boost I just install new pulley and I'm ready to go.

I have the same tune. Do you smell burning after aggressive driving ? normal driving is totally fine. I was also told the tune is good for up to 172m crank pulley boost. I smell the burning since I installed the Header and Tune 1 year ago. I only drove 3000 miles since last year.....

If you have a tune that was setup for a larger crank pulley and you don't have one then you most certainly are running rich at WOT. After you go to WOT your ECU is going to deliver fuel based off of the fueling maps, during normal driving around town the ECU uses the sensors data to make corrections(within a limited range) so your car would run how it's supposed to. The only way to fix your problem is to either put a appropriate sized pulley on for the boost levels your tune is setup for or get the car retuned for what you have.

Check for exhaust leaks, make sure down pipes are welded good. What I was told by kleeman is that the boost maps where in place if I ever decided to add a pulley but, never would be used being I'm running stock boost. Perhaps the smell you smell is from having the primary cats deleted ?

agreed with the boys...grab some logs and let us all know. You want to check IAT's as well as if your spiking then the ecu is dumping fuel to compensate (like it should)

Guys, I can't say this enough. Once you start modding get a afr gauge on the car! You wouldn't believe how many times we get someone blaming software only to find out its a hardware error!!!

You need a wideband to log your AFRs.

I cannot understand why anyone would start modifying a car and changing the factory tune without a wideband. Without one (or using one while tuning), you are just guessing blindly and risking your motor.

As for Toadster's bad tank of gas - ridiculous....I can't even begin to understand his thought process...

Every car is different. I will say this if i would of used my first baseline tune and no fault to anyone it was a starting point my car would not run the way it does. It would of showed killer torque on the dyno but bs drag times. Two street pull with my zietronix and the air fuel spot on!. This is a must either do it on the street then check the power on the dyno or get it close on the dyno and do one street pull to clean it up because it will be a tad different. On my dynojet 224 load is the same as street but af often gets richer on the street.

If I have a exhaust leak the engine light could turn on right ? I didn't know primary cat delete could produce some burning smell. (Smell like fireworks)

Was he following you as you were driving aggressively, or did he drive it? If the latter, there is no way he could accurately distinguish what the mixture was/is.
As for what he said about the pulley cleaning up the alleged mixture issue, you might want to find a new mechanic.

Before the service he test drove it and once its park smell like gun powder. I just spoke to Cory from Kleemann that smell might be because of Primary Cat delete. Plus, the smell is not gas smell, its more like gun powder like firework. I guess its just the Header.

"catalytic converters were designed to limit the emissions of hydrocarbons (unburnt fuel), oxides of nitrogen (NoX) and Carbon Monoxide, so removing even one set will make the car smell"

By the time the car was parked, it had been running closed loop for quite some time. Again, no way he could tell what the mixture was at wot.
I agree with Cory on the primary delete...or you are leaking some fluid on the exhaust.

Mechanics logic is not totally off base(As far as increasing boost to lean it some) But it's the Kleemann tune. That would incline that the tune was not optimized for your car and mods you have, not what you are gonna put in down the road.

I am getting a Emmisions failure at idle on my K-4 tune. so this time it going on a dyno and no one size fits all chip..

If you're getting a failure at idle, it's unlikely it's a tune issue. I doubt Kleeman makes any changes whatsoever to the idle tuning, unless you have cams and perhaps not even then.
