E63 significant fuel smell after filling up.

My 2007 E63 has 79,731 miles, and the last few times we have filled the tank the garage has smelled like a stong odor of fuel. After you go out and drive the car for a bit and use about an 1/8th of a tank of fuel, there is no longer a smell. It seems to only follow fill-ups. The gas cap is on tight, and there is no notable fuel smell in the cabin. It has me very concerned as this is my family car, and my garage has a 60,000 BTU heater out there, and I really do not want to blow up anything.

I remember reading some things that the E55s had something that leaked in their fuel system, and was not sure if the E63 was different, or if this may be related. Any help is appreciated, as I leave tomorrow for a 1,500 mile trip to Canada in this car.

Thank you, and happy holidays.

I hope you dont have to join "the club", Mitch. This issue has happened on the E63 as well.
Good luck on your trip, dont let this get in your head on the way, it's no big deal especially if you dont smell any gas inside...considering you will be in the car for a long period of time.

IMHO it is not OK to drive this vehicle.

Do not fill up the car any longer. Keep fuel level under 3/4 level.

The fuel pools on top of the gas tank. This is dangerous. Period

See the many E55 threads with pictures. You have the same design tank and body structure. It will leak inside.

Fill up the car. Go home, take out rear seat, pop off the body covers and inspect the tank and senders. 5 minutes of work.

Take pictures and call NHTSA.

I made an appointment at the Mercedes dealer scheduled for the day after we return to have this fixed. I advised my wife to not fill it up, and if she smells fuel inside the car to take it to the Mercedes dealer near her Mom's house (where we are having Christmas) in Canada immediately.

Thanks for the help though!

If this an out of pocket expense. Take it to an American dealer. The Canadian dealer will not have any idea since they don't use ethanol in their premium gas. Therefore they are less inclined to give discounts like American dealers have.

Please read this web page for more info.

Ive had this problem for 3+ years and still have not blown up.

Call me paranoid. But I am just not willing to gamble by worrying about money when my three and a half year old daughter rides in this car. Her safety and life is worth more to me than anything. Thank you for the heads up on the Canadian dealers and their fuel though. If this car starts to smell of gas while we are here in Canada I will just have the thing shipped back to Indianapolis for repair.

Funny this thread popped up now. I am an educated owner, and was aware of the E55 problems, but would have thought it addressed in the E63.

Well, I am also getting a faint smell. Also, as the tank gets low, it seems the CEL is going off. (So it seems, need couple more data points).

I will check in the new year and post with pictures.

Could one technically call this part of the emissions system and claim it covered under the 10yr warrantee?

No smell inside the car, just noticeable when going into the garage in then AM.

You'd think it would be covered under emissions, but they will 99.9% say it's not part of the emissions system.

I had the same issue last year and the dealer fixed it even though my warranty expired.

When the gas tank is full they detected a small puddle of fuel along the outside of the fuel sender/pump units (under reaer passenger seats).

There seems to be an issue with the seal material failing over time.

What brand of gas do you fillup with (Chevron, Shell, Costco)?

My 07 E63 also had this issue. They fixed it twice (I made sure to get it serviced with near empty tank so dealer had to top it off both times to confirm issue went away)

Problem never really went away and I just didnt bother to waste another trip to get it fix (even with the free gas). I just filled it 3/4 of a way.. eventually traded it in May of this year for an M3 vert. The M didnt last long as I'm back in another 63.

The "cabin"? What cabin? All you Candians live in cabins? With ginormous heaters?

I exclusively use Shell V-Power 93 octane.

I dropped the car off yesterday at the Mercedes dealer and they seemed familiar with the smell and what is likely in need of replacement. So hopefully they can get this handled and fixed properly and quickly.

Wow. That is mind boggling. How has nobody developed a part that does not have this failure?

Amgrocket actually posted a better fuel pump from airtex but the fuel sender on the other side is still a problem, you need a solution for both sides and MB should just do it already

IMHO the best solution would be a completely new / redesigned fuel delivery system - tank, external pump(s), and a return line...but that will never happen...

So, as I understand it, there is nothing I can ask for from Mercedes to ensure that this does not happen again later?
