this is how we do it on the camaros as well and we had no issues with. kit will come with skid plate and filter socks as well.

looks sick... now coviering those intakes would be key, there is another member that is doing a TWINcharged deal, i dont know if thats what you got going on here but he had his mounted on the back by the trunk... i might post some of those pics for you guys to see

I completely agree. I had the same open filter set up on my Turbo Night Rod. Got caught in the rain a few times and no issues. But we will take all precautions :-)

2003 porsche 996 turbo
so how do you plan to protect the filter when your out on the interstate late at nite and run across a big rig recap in the highway? you wont know if it rips the filter off or not and would be ingesting debris and everything else until you check it. just not a smart place to run the filter

That probably doesn't happen very frequently.
However in the hypothetical occurrence that you are unable to avoid this future tire shrapnel that doesn't yet exist,you'ld have to exercise some critical thinking skills and pull over to check for damage.
In this yet unborn situation, If the tire that was fated for his air filter does indeed completely rip the filter off the compressor housing.....
..... I guess you call a tow truck.
Seriously though, nothing is idiot proof not even a completely stock car. Modifications sometimes make for some compromise and when driving a severely modified car you need an elevated level of awareness in regards to both the mechanicals of the car and the surrounding traffic/obstacles.

I am just surprised they could not find a spot for the turbos closer to / in the engine bay and run proper intakes.
As for the filters being "fine" where they are - to each his own...
Either way, it should be a blast to drive! Have fun and be safe .

doing 100 miles an hr or more in the dark while so many of you run mexico at night the possibility is better than you think. by the time you see a black object at night its to late you have run it over.
how much debris needs to be ingested by a turbo to ruin it? not much. just my .02 i have twin turbos mounted very low and no way i would put a filter underneath a car when there are better options

How did you run the drain setup? I assume you have an oil assist pump to get the drain back to the pan?

with over 2 million miles under my belt i can you with absolute certainty that the shrapnel does exist. it doesnt have to rip the filter off but merely rip the filter so it has an opening allowing debris to enter the turbo and the engine.
doing 100 miles an hr or more in the dark while so many of you run mexico at night the possibility is better than you think. by the time you see a black object at night its to late you have run it over.

Well you sound like a well traveled motorsports veteran like myself and I respect your opinions. Different people have different levels of risk aversion, and in my opinion highly modified vehicles aren't for the averse Me personally I'm fairly apathetic unless it's my DD, I wouldn't do anything crazy to something that was my only car.

a cheap 70k mileage motor for my turbo porsche runs 15k$ minimun. add 30k for a full build and the cost of ingesting debris can be staggering.
i was thinking maybe a circular sheetmetal shield with an open front could be fabbed to protect the filter while letting the air in. maybe louver it for some added strength and airflow

Yeah I'm with you on the shields. I was thinking some coarse stainless mesh made into a cover might work for him to keep anything catastrophic at distance.
The turbos they're using aren't that much, you can get 2 for less than $2500 and you'ld have to run them in some gnarly conditions for extended time to cause damage that would be noticeable. My main concern would be one applicable to your P car as well, the lack of an iron sleeve in the block. Sandy Debris getting into the intake will gouge the soft alusil bore to death in no time, and a new block is either 15k+ from MB, a whole engine swap from a salvage car, or waiting months for a custom iron sleeve engine to get built.

just considering the cost. new close tolerance turbos run approx 2500$ each , cost of ingesting a small piece of steel from a recap into the engine and causing a fatal event of the engine can run 15 to 20k$ for a fully built engine.
