M156 cam adjuster noise and oil change
Posted this on the PL and got nothing. Lets see what you all think
I had had 2 oil changes where the filter did not hold onto the cap so when I removed it, it had a mess.
You see, the filter element should hold onto the cap with plastic clips. When you unscrew the cap the oil filter lifts with it and a spring loaded valve at the bottom of the oil filter housing opens and allows the oil to drain. If the oil filter does not lift from the valve, the only place for the oil to go is out the top. Meaning, a mess.
So previous oil change I screwed in the cap and then unscrewed it to ensure the filter stayed with the cap. It didn't the first time, so I reapeated until it did. In other words, "I messed with it".
After that oil change, I got the valve adjuster noise during start up (about 50% of the time always after some period of time with the enginer off). Knowing they are hydraulic, my intuition told me.. "you messed with the oil filter and now the oil is draining".
Well, could not see any problems with the filter on my next change, but this time I did not "mess with it". The noise is gone. At least so far.
My questions are:
1. If the oil was draining from the filter when the engine was off, would valve adjuster noise on start-up be expected?
2. If yes, would damage be expected?
Note, oil analysis is pending. I have 4 prior analysis, so a good baseline.
Thoughts? Wisdom? Documentation?

This place is a joke.
This is a common problem when changing oil on that motor, sometimes the filter stays down and makes a mess...If the oil drains down you will have some noise...whether it's the lifters or chain tensioners I'm not 100% sure.

I have noticed the noise as well, I have both my cam adjusters replaced and all 4 cam shafts under the TSB and to this day if the car sits for 2 weeks the first start up is NOISEY until car reaches temp!!!! I am assuming this is due to the settling of the oil over time. If I start the car again 2 days later the car purrrrs like a Cat.
Just an FYI

Yeah, the noise in my case disappears just as soon as oil pressure is up. Maybe 2-4seconds. Engine temp plays no role.
Well, oil analysis should be done soon and we will see if any negative effects.

Good find, I would rather deal with a mess at oil change in exchange for instant oil pressure to those 4 cams.

I would get some noise on first startup after an oil change after that nothing.
But one day the lifters were making noise for about 4 miles of driving..oil temp was normal car fully up to operational temp....
I got pissed and rip 1-3 in Sport Mode...after that she ran like a Toyota...
I must say I had no real issue with this car....Wish the new owner the same...RIP but being rebuild...
