Angry First AMG What A Disappointment

After months of looking around for the car of my dreams I found an 08 E63 with 43k on the clock. Got it in March but the weather was poor so really did not start driving it until May and have been disappointed in the car. First fill up and the car has gas fumes inside the car, and come to find out there are articles in LA Times and other magazines regarding this issue with the E class but Mercedes does nothing. Now driving home from work on Friday the car has a horrible misfire and starts blowing smoke out the pipes so it gets towed to the dealer and the #7 injector was stuck open and now I need all new plugs and injectors for $2400. He said if it was hydro locked then i possibly bent a rod and would need major engine work done. Did a quick google search and looks like this is a common problem as well. So 3 months in and less than 3k miles added and now I am looking 2 major problems to fix. I wish Mercedes would stand behind the AMG cars and help customers out with these type of problems. I truly love the car but not if I have to bring it to the shop every 3 months.

Well first off, you my friend have hit the mother lode of E63 issues. Get the dealer to only replace the #7 injector and then drive the car. A set of plugs will cost you 100 at spark plug.com if you want to replace them, NGK Iridium are the plug of choice. Put a few cans of injector cleaner and lubricant into a half tank of good gas, no discount gas bar stuff and drive easy for about 20 miles then give it a good flogging.

I was just reading a post about another member who had the #7 injector fail and it was out of warranty and the dealer called Mercedes and got them to cover the entire bill, not sure why the dealer went above and beyond but I wish my dealer would do that for me. The biggest bummer is that I have been speaking with Bruce at Beck Imports about a warranty but have been busy at work so did not get a chance to have the dealer do the inspection.

Not many choices in MN and the dealer was about 3 miles from where the car died so it was the best choice at the time

Damn! Sorry to hear that bro. Yeah don't pay that amount for spark plugs and wires lol that's a moronic amount. It would seem convenient as in one stop fix of everything but order stuff online and get it installed, you'd save a ton lot of money.

I hope everything works out for you and have faith that your car is indeed a beast once these issues gets worked out

E 63S Wagon Renntech, E55 Renntech, SL65, SL 55 030, ML, bunch of old ones--they come, they go...
Me too, sorry for your disappointment...

but...I gotta ask....no PPI? No reading around or talking to other 211 owners? Or the shop where you planned on getting it worked on?
Even at my small dealership, I wont let a customer buy an out of warranty car without talking to a wrench about that car. No confirmation of that, then no sale.
And yes, $2500 for plugs and injectors..... Might be a good indicator to look elsewhere...

Dealer called and said the engine hydrlocked and he THINKS I bent the #7 rod. He said $2600 to pull the engine and diagnose the problem. I would think that if the dealer believes it is a bent rod they should check top dead center to see if there are and differences between cylinders, and also do a compression test. At this point I don't know what to do I am looking at a minimum of $7500 bill and it could be higher than that.

You stated that the motor was running when you shut it down, now everytime someone turned the key to start the #7 injector was flooding that cylinder. Get the dealer to remove the plug, disconnect the injector and clear that cylinder of fuel and then do a compression test, if it looks okay install a new injector into #7 with a new plug and try it out. If anything you throw a few hundred dollars at it to get it running to verify the engine is good. If all works after this, get a buddy and change out the other injectors if you want.

First order of business, is take a deep breathe and relax brotha. Second, get your car away from that dealer STAT. I would start by replacing all your plugs yourself, let me know if you need help on brand and model #. Then replace your # 7 injector. Once you do those two tasks, see how the car runs then before you take the next step.

Looks like they are prepping you to be bent over.

chawkins2001, I agree get it away from the dealer, chances are this is the first AMG they have had in the dealership. But #7 injector should be replaced the cylinder should be cleared of fuel, a squirt of oil into the plug hole after clearing would not hurt either, check the oil level to ensure minimal fuel contamination and then put a new plug in the car, start it. If it runs okay drive it gingerly then change out the oil and filter. Keep your fingers crossed./ But get it away from the dealer fast.

Hydro locked? From fuel? That's ****ing laughable. Tell them to get the hell away from your car and have it towed somewhere else. Hell, I'm no tech and only do simple stuff on my cars so I craiglisted a ASE tech in my area who charges less than 1/2 what my reg indy shop charges and is quite competent and trustworthy. All it takes is a little effort.

I've seen it first hand on a cl63 ( same 156 engine). Rods bend so easy on the 156. I've seen bent rods on them from both coolant and fuel hydrolock's. if it was me, start with a new injector and go from there. If you did bend a rod, it's a good time to replace the head bolts and reseal the bed plate that's going to leak as well in time. 05-06 e55's are more reliable and much cheaper to fix, that is if your going to dump it and move on. You may be able to sell it as is to a forum member.

That happens more often than you'ld think. A injector gets a little dirt past the screen and trapped in the pintle, then stuck partially open. That cylinder fills with fuel overnight and when the owner tries to start the car, either the starter bend the rod, or that cylinder was later down the list on the cylinders to fire and the other holes power through it, bending the rod.

Another bad one is a car with hood/cowl seals that allow water to pour on the intake manifold. If the injector oring is bad, water can get past it into the cylinder and the same problem with the fuel occurs.

You sure you're looking at the right engine? Those sell for at least triple that over here. That's a nice spread to capitalize on if you're correct.

The dealer already changed all the plugs and injectors and got it running yesterday. He said that his engine guy said it sounds a bit goofy and that's why he think I bent a rod. I will be going down today to take a listen then it will be getting towed to a different shop just not sure which one yet.

Sell it, if you are dependent on a dealer for service and own a car with out a warranty, you are in for financial disaster.

Youre up the creek.......
Do a borescope or compression test to verify.
Dealer will always try to sell you a bigger piece of the pie. I wouldn't take the chance on a AMG.

Dealer is fixing the bent rod if I tell you how much it's going to cost I might cry. I expressed my disappointment to the dealer regarding the quality of my AMG and the service manager called Mercedes and they are willing to cover part of the cost not sure how much but I will find out when the car is done in a week. Fidelity warrant being purchased when this is fixed so I can avoid this problem in the future.
