Question Please help - Gas Tank Replament Question

I was told by dealer that vent at top of gas tank is not working and that the tank will have to be replaced for $2,600! Is there a cheaper option to fix this problem? Has anyone else had to replace their gas tank?

Thanks.

lol that's some amount, I'd assume that'll include installation and all.

I think the new tank alone is around 800$

My cost to replace the defective gas tank (leaking at same point as yours) was closer to $2k.

Alternatively you could only fill your gas tank 3/4, IMO this is not a solution.

$2600 thats alot of coin. Probably mostly labor since the rear end has to be dropped to access the gas tank and remove/replace w/new one.

I would consider that ($2600) would include at least a new filter as well. The rear axle does not have to be removed for this job. I would get a bit more information before diving in.

You need to ask for a discount. I had my fuel tank and both fuel sending units replaced for ~$2600.

What I think is that most of the dough is for labor and not for the tank, but you need to confirm this with the service center. If they are charging the major part for the gas tank, you could negotiate or get a used part from a reputed dismantler/reseller. Consulting a competent mechanic who could mend the existing tank would be perfect though.

The only reason I had the work done at the dealer was in the far flung hope that the NHTSA eventually saddles MB with a recall and we can get reimbursed for the work done due to this problem.
