Fuel rail/Injector question

Alright, so before I go stacking 168s or 175s on my car, I've got a question.

It's been recommended to me that even though I do plan on going 'safe' with my pulley stack, that I should either replace, upgrade or at least clean out my fuel rail and injectors. My baby's got 113K on her and she drives beautifully. The last thing I want to do is run static and have a boat anchor.

So...

I'm really not in the notion of wanting to upgrade my injectors/rail per se simply because that's just going to lead me on a never ending spiral of upgrades and costs I don't want to incur. The pulley stack w/cooling is going to be the last mod I put on this car simply because I want to keep her within the comfort power range. Besides, 500+ whp is hard enough to control, heh.

What recommendations do you guys have for my situation? Could I clean the current fuel system out to the best possible or is there maybe an OEM replacement or slightly improved set of parts I can get? Any help would be appreciated.

Replacing the fuel pumps and filter would be a good start. You can remove your injectors and have them cleaned, rebuilt , and flow balanced. I am not sure if you have a reputable local company that can perform this, but injector dynamics in Tempe,AZ can. They are very good at what they do.

I'll sell you my 06 blue injectors cheap. They are a higher flow rate than the 05 and lower black injectors. I believe there is a 25% increase in flow. You could send them to injector dynamics and get them cleaned and prepped. You could also order SLR injectors. Mine are the same flow rate as the SLR injectors just that mine are 4 hole instead of 6 hole like the SLR injectors.

^^^ THIS ^^^

It's not as "sexy" as throwing tuner parts at your car, but with 113K on the odometer, it is WAY overdue....

I've said before that my hypothesis about motor failures has to do with running out of fuel due to deferred maintenance of fuel filters... a clogged filter restricts flow, and with the increased demand for fuel from performance upgrades it's only a matter of time before disaster strikes.

As has been astutely pointed out, when these cars were new plenty of people pushed them to 500WHP without things like looped fuel rails or larger injectors.... but they had the advantage of perfect, clean fuel filters and new fuel pumps.

It seems weird to say that a 500WHP E55 is "commonplace" but certainly there have been plenty of folks who run that kind of power level now without looped rails and injectors.... seems to me those kind of mods really aren't necessary until you are somewhere north of 550+HP.

Isn't there documentation somewhere on the forum/Internet that says these motors suffer from fuel starvation in stock trim let alone making more boost/power?

I thought it was almost mandatory for the big CP/headers/TB guys to run the rail or at the very least, larger injectors to compensate for the air.

Am I wrong here?

There are certain part numbers for the injectors. I remember finding it on this site a long time ago, but am too lazy to do it again.

If someone finds it, post the part numbers for the different injectors up in here.

Are these bigger injectors needed in your case? and the answer is:

Definitely Yes, Yes, Yes

you will even feel changes on the car after tune, specially if you are going 175 pulley with you current set up.

Fuel filters are a must. I just changed mine out and I am seeing 5-10psi higher at the rail than I did before. my car only have 70k too.

Isn't fuel filter integrated inside the fuel pumps? If not, can anyone post a picture of its place?

Here is the factory illustration of the gas tank, fuel pump, senders and filter.

I believe in this case we are talking about part #55 in the illustration (driver's side, sender with integrated filter).... someone smarter than me can chime in. My understanding is that the fuel PUMP is located on the passenger side.. (part # 40?)

Ya the filter is in the sending unit. There is the pickup socks on the fuel pumps also which are commonly confused for the filter.

I forget who, but somebody posted a pic of their fuel filter when they pulled it out. Straight-up nasty. That should convince anyone to change theirs out.

The assembly should come with both pumps as mine did.

Because you're in there doing the work! and you already have to pull and disconnect the hoses from each, the pump and the filter. I would just replace both ... Regarding injectors you can get them on eBay for around tree fiddy to 400$ bucks, and the ev1-ev6 adapters for another fifty. good luck and don't forget to data log. Check out this link http://https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/510180-do-not-overlook-your-fuel-filter.html

I can't imagine you'd need new injectors with just headers/exhaust and pulley. We didn't see fuel start to suffer until over the 575 whp mark (dyno dynamics) on the stock fuel system in my '03 and iirc your '06 should have the blue top injectors which flow about 40 points more than my brown tops.

However, I would agree with the filter recommendations made above...

There is so much information out there about it... I'm really confused too.
Doesn't a looped rails makes sense anyway?

It helps to keep the pressure constant within the rail. The theory I subscribe to is that in the standard rail with the fuel feed connection located at #8 injector, #8 will experience lower pressure first as the pressure builds from the two ends of the "U" back. Modifying the rail to be continous, as was done in the case of the SLR, helps to maintain a constant pressure. That said, low flow and pressure due to clogged filters and or worn pumps exposes any cylinder to catastrophic failure. Just my $.02.

Wait a second, I was told that the fuel filter on the E55 AMG isn't replaceable unless you replace the entire fuel tank.

I've got no problem replacing the fuel filter if that's not the case. What's the proper word?

EDIT: Just saw the other statement. I'll be honest. I'm not terribly good at DIY stuff. I don't have much space in the garage for that stuff either, heh. I take it a dealership won't replace the filters?

Filter/level sensor are integral and can only be replaced. It is accessible through the left access opening on the left side of the tank.

Fuel pumps are integral and can only be replaced. They are accessible through the access opening on the right side of the tank.

There are many posts within this forum pertaining to these items.
