CLS55 mufflers on E55
I know M3toE55 did this then went to CLS63 mufflers.
Is there a noticeable difference putting CLS55 on the E55? I always thought the parts were the same.
Any advise?

In terms of sound I believe the ranking went something like this....
C63 > E63 > CLS55 > ... > E55
Not sure where the CLS63 mufflers slot in and why the SL55/63 mufflers have never been discussed, though.
C63 > E63 > CLS55 > ... > E55

All I can say is a CLS55 sounds SICK! I want those mufflers, been trying to find a set. Much louder than an E55

CLS55 AMG 030
I had a E55 with reso and secondary cat delete and now have a CLS55 with reso and secondary cat delete so the only difference is the mufflers and its like NIGHT & DAY I would have def thrown a pair of CLS55 mufflers on my E55 if I would have known back then.

M3, why did you change from CLS55 to CLS63? Just wanted more ?
I watched your vids and YES, the CLS does sound frickin awesome.
PS- I have always though you have the absolute best looking E55 there is... Serious!

Bramage-
Check the 'Exhaust Sound Thread' started by Denroll sometime Sunday or Monday ... I will have my setup on there as well.
C63 Mufflers and Resonator Delete (straight piped back to the C63 cans). Stock when normal cruising/driving, loud and scary when WOT. On cold starts, it sounds BRUTAL.

Anyone have any advice on what they did with the CLS55 mufflers to not have the exhaust tips stick out an additional 4 inches?!?
Any advice would be great.

FWIW.... Here's what I did..
Had my local motorsport shop cut out the mufflers just behind the axel. From there we tacked 3 inch pipes all the way out to the stock tips that we cut off of the old mufflers. At first we welded up a y so both tips were still functional and the droooone was obnoxious. After a little bit of thought we decided that the y was causing the drone, acting like a flute. (We test drove it with just the old pipe cut off right near the rear axle, sounded right) So, out with the welder again. This time we modified the existing tips so that the 3 inch pipe could go through the outside section of the tip only and closed off the inside section to maintain the stock look. Sounds good, especially at WOT!. Plus, we shed about 55 pounds!!!!

Not sure why but the E55 has a more restrictive muffler than the CL55, S55 or CLS55. When you run a boroscope in each of them, you can see the differences.

Does anyone have measurements comparing the length of the tips from an E55 to a CLS55?
Im talking from the start (off muffler) to the end of the tips
Pics would be great too

I did not take measurements, but the muffler portion looks identical in terms of shape and length. In fact I thought: This wont sound any different
The tips (from muffler to end of tip) are 1.25" longer when doing a side by side comparison. The mounting post is in a similar place, but they are bent down on the CLS55 muffler. We bent them up about 3/4" to get the muffler positioned. What I did was cut out a 1" of exhaust and pulled the entire assembly in to get the tips where I wanted them. If I did this again, I would have cut and re-welded the mounting posts.
The tips also sit 3/4" in towards the center of the car. You will need to trim the rear valance.
Sound is amazing, and as I have said before: I would not change this to the C63 units. Those are too loud for me
I was going under an Under-pass with some construction workers at the far end dicking around.. I gunned it under there and I saw all of them jump, and then stare. I had the window down and it scared me. All of us looked like:

Just put my CLS55 mufflers on and all I can say is WOW!! I already had my secondaries and resonator deleted with straight pipes, and now it sounds SO pissed off at WOT!
Not much difference in just cruising around/ no drone, but very loud at WOT or even half throttle.
Love it.
