3000 Stall Torque Converter Review

After battling drone, vibrations and shuddering around 1000 rpm under load, in traffic or up a hill i thought it might be time to pull the trigger on a new torque converter and what better way then a 3000 stall from UPD.
My rear main seal was weeping for about 6 months also, there is no way i would miss the opportunity with the tranny out, it was time.

On a side note, make sure you repair rear main seal leaks swiftly, if you wait on it like i did, it will hurt the wallet just that much more in corroded parts having to be replaced.

My first impressions upon receiving the new High Stall were how well it was packaged being sent from US to AUS. UPD really do a great job on every level, not just the quality of the products but the finer details, including the customer service. I couldnt be happier, those boys are top notch!

Now into the product, i had my Indy install the converter along with a RMS. my Fixed pulley has been off the car for a couple weeks while i rework my resistor and wiring harness so i initially noticed a slight delay like the revs would hang at very light throttle before the car began to move forward. Nothing crazy yet i was just getting used to the new feel.

Pulling up to a light with no one around, i decided to mash the throttle on green. The car pulled like it was being rear ended and just kept pulling and pulling and pulling like the throttle never ended. The feeling was amazing the car was now more awake then it ever had been, even after i did the fixed pulley. I couldnt get enough but i really want to test it out with the fixed pulley back in. i know LM7 on the forums runs the same setup with a 77mm fixed pulley and torque converter. would be good if he could chime in..
I cant wait to get my fixed pulley back in the car this weekend.

I truly believe that with a high stall these cars run harder then a pullied car running 15psi. Throw in a limited slip diff and its complete. Sure the numbers dont stack up the same on a dyno, but with the level of torque you can put down to the ground, try move your head from the back of your seat between gear changes. Its next to impossible! These torque converters really do convert our cars... into a rocket ship seriously about to just F**ing take off, chewing up the pavement and spitting it out onto the cars that lurk in the rear view mirror.

On a serious note for any of you sitting on the fence with this mod you cant go wrong. High stalls are well worth it for the pleasure of just neck snapping torque on tap and an endless throttle of torque. I cant wait to get my fixed pulley in this weekend. I will revert back... if anyones selling rear tyres let me know.

Get the TCU tuned as well, so that the part throttle shifts don't take place in the stall rpm of the converter and you'll love it even more!

The stall definitely wakes these sleds up big time. Going with our tcu tune adjust the stall speed in the egs2. It makes a considerable difference brotha.

Nice write up and lots of good details! The converter seems to be one of the least understood mods and for some, best kept secret to unleash power. I have been alternating driving an E55 and CL55 on a weekly basis. Both have 3000 stalls and TCU tunes and a blast to driv e! I don`t hear the tires spin at part throttle but sure is a lot of black dust all over both rear 1/4 panels for some reason

Its honestly the best feeling driving with a high stall. If only drag radials were street legal in Aus. Biggest regret will be burning a whole in my wallet paying for tires from doing rolling burnouts in second gear. Hey thats why we own AMGs

Some do, unfortunately car gets impounded 30 days for a first offence. Months for second offence and if caught a third time car gets crushed! Even burnouts will get you impounded for 30days. Fastest patrol cars are a n/a v8 5.0 litre. They only push 350hp at the crank, just mash the pedal and leave em for dust. Happens quiet alot here

The loose converter lets your engine rev higher into its powerband before fully engaging. Tooling around town you won't notice this effect... quite the contrary (until lockup) really.

Thanks for the awesome write up, I thought stall converters were only available for serious drag cars. With all the cars I have ever owned, no matter how much money and upgrades I pumped into them, I could never quite get that neck snapping pull off and gear shift. I did a bit of reading up on them and discovered the great way they 'unleash more power' without any dyno hp gains. It's all in how the power in delivered. This has definitely thrown a spanner in my modding works because I was going to go crank pulley/HE split cooling/tune next, but now I am not so sure.

I find myself sometimes having the same problem from time to time. The advice my friends including Craig always give me is... Do both!

If you are in Melbourne, Australia....the last patrol car with an n/a 5.0 litre was around 1998/1999. For the past 15 years I have not seen any police or patrol car with a 5.0 litre.

I am currently fascinated with high stall converters and can't wait to get my hands on one. A few questions - how will they affect wheel spin on my tyre burning E55? Many high stall converter dealers recommend serious cooling mods in addition, to help keep the transmission from overheating. Do I need to look into cooling the transmission as well? I do a lot of my own work on my car - is this a specialist job (no, I don't have access to a lift)?

a good part throttle hit in 2nd gear frys my tires and forget low speed kick downs its all over the road. the best is that strong lock up clutch she will pull like freight train. I will guarantee you drive a pulley car stock stall then a stock pulley car with a stall that you would love the car with the stall much better.

The more i drive with the high stall the more i cant believe how i drove without it. It takes some getting use to in the beginning with part throttle take offs, the revs hang and the gear changes become less obvious, but damn when you hit the gas it pulls even better then with my supercharger pulley and stock stall. Being in the fat chunk of the torque curve when it engages is why you just fry the tyres, even in 2nd or 3rd gear. Esp spoils the fun by cutting power in first gear but with it off youll smoke up the street. You shouldnt need any cooling mods as the converter has 3 lock up clutches and isnt slipping at highway speeds with steady throttle.
I say it drives better then stock, take offs are much smoother and cruising feels the same. 10/10 mod! I got mine from UPD, they can hook you up with a high stall that matches your power output or range

RAWE55, So that's a no on the tranny cooling, correct?

When you say the revs hang and the shifts become less obvious. Can you go into more detail on that? Is the car going to sounds and feel like its one long continuous gear?

3000 stall Sounds devine.

This is what I was afraid of - smoking my street tyres. The only reason my 55 is so quick is because I have learned to put down the power on take-off without smoking the rears - the high stall converter sounds like a handful to keep the car going in a straight line. I am sure with a set of Mickey Thompson's on the dragstrip this isn't a problem, but on the street against an M5 it sounds like hell?
