Hey guys,

not sure if anyone experienced this but I bought a set of front hub/bearings from a store down the street and replaced the entire unit on each side. It was a simple job. But now I have the service ABS, ESP, and Brake warnings on the display screen. Im thinking I bought a set with a defective magnet for the wheel sensors....what do you guys think? Or is it something I did wrong.

The power steering is very heavy to turn as well.

Anyone ever experience this?

sounds like maybe you missed plugging in a connection?

There was no electrical connection that I had to disconnect in the first place ... Unless I'm crazy I forgot that I disconnected something ...

Speed sensor?

Had experience this with other MB vehicles using aftermarket parts? Sounds like you replaced the complete hub and not just ABS rings and bearings?


Personally I would not remove and retain the original ABS rings and simply replace inner and outer bearings to save the sensor hassle.

had the same issue, the place i bought my bearings from sent me the wrong seal, was not magnetic and cause the same problem you had

If the inner dust seal is not the correct part, or at the right depth these malfunctions will occur. It is the tone ring for the wheel speed sensor.

THanks guys, haven't had a chance to order a replacement hub assembly. I switched out the whole hub assembly figuring it would be easier job, but once into the project realized how easy the job was either way. At that point I figured why not replace the whole thing, well when I put everything together I got the malfunction, so I should have just took the good bearings out and put them in my old hub assembly but instead wanted the nice new hub assembly since I paid for it, so I took the magnetic ring off the old assembly and put it on the new assembly and it still does not work...but chances are cause I somewhat bent it a bit to do the procedure. I was able to return the hubs for my money back. Any recommendations on where to buy a "good" hub assembly besides the merc dealer? (Would prefer a place where someone actually bought one and it works good) Just bought this car about a month ago and haven't been able to drive it! ha! Thanks for any help.

Hey guys just wanted to give you a heads up. I ended up buying new ring seals ($20) for the bearings. Pulled the old ones out, and pressed the new ones in with a press. Made sure it was nice and flush. I also took the old sensors out and cleaned them up very well. cleaned out the brake dust and any other gunk in there. Put it all together, and guess what? It works no problem! All good now.

Now off to installing my heat exchanger, pulley, and tune from Shardul

Problem solved. I just replaced my bearings, race, and seals and when I drove off, ABS and ESP failure. I was surprised to see this because I used OEM parts to prevent it.

What caused the problem was I did not install the inner seal flush with the hub. It was about 1mm counter sunk. this created a larger distance from the sensor. I removed the seal, and installed a new one flush with the hub. Problem solved.

So my advice;
1. Use OEM seals so you know the magnetic sensor is built it.
2. Install the seal FLUSH with the hub so the distance to the sensor is correct.
3. Make sure seal and sensor are clean and free from grease.
4. Do one side at a time and test drive to isolate any issues.
