IGNITION SWITCH
Guys and Gals
I have a quick question, I have a SRS light on and it seems to be the "IGNITION SWITCH" per the dealership. I know the dealership as to re-code the unit with key. I was wondering if anyone as ever bough a used one and have the dealership recode it or doe's it have to be a new unit coming from the dealership. Thanks in advance for any input/info.

If you need a new EIS it will come from the dealer, installed by the dealer, and programmed by the dealer. This is what is classified as a theft relevant part(TRP). MB is very tight with vehicle security!

Thanks for the reply, but my issue is airbag warning light. The car runs, drives and starts fine. The mechanic who looked at the car is a pretty good guy, so I'm just wondering if a EIS issue would cause a SRS warning light. I was always under the impression that the EIS was related to security and starting issues.

He probably meant to say"ignition squib". This is an SRS related term. These can be done at your indie shop. You would purchase the whole airbag in question. Install the new component. Then clear the fault memory with SDS. No recoding would be necessary for an airbag replacement.

I just put in an EIS ,I have a star set up so I did it myself ,I was getting all kinds of crazy codes from that bad switch ,I had starting issues ,brake light messages, and probably 15 different weird codes, along with code for switch, now everything good

Nice, so you got the switch from the dealership and program it your self?

Yes,they have to make copy of your lic and reg lol,and give you a program key to start the coding process,it's a little bit of a pain since I never did it before but my friend works for Benz as a shop supervisor and he pointed me in right direction .put in new shifter also,it had a broken pawl in it which I removed and used it for years like that but each component was blaming each other for no start problem so I replaced them both,it turned out to be EIS ,but the codes it would throw were all over the place ,that EIS is the heart of the car so to speak, alot of components are connected through it,good luck

Benz_addict is correct I've never seen a defective EIS causing an SRS warning light. Its probably the front passenger weight seat sensor. The wires running inside of the sensor will break (the sensor in under the seat cushion cover aka leather) Get a short test it will tell you exactly what is causing the code.
