Horse Power question....?
I was told that the E55 engine rated by MB at 469 hp actually produces 493 hp as does the identical engine in the SL 55. Can anyone confirm or debunk this? I may get a personalized plate that reads...469 hp, but maybe it should read 493 hp instead. Not interested in being a poser or inaccurate, so what is the right number here? Anyone have any documentation to substantuate the horse power one way or another? Thanks.

Speculation is that the lower HP rating (advertisement) is done to appease the owners of SL55, CL55 & S55 to feel better about paying more for the same HP as the lower priced E55.
Every article you find on the W210 E55 from 1999-2002 listed or advertises the W210 E55 with 349HP. Every article on the 2000-2002 CL55 & S55 list 354 & 355HP. Renntech list the W210 at 355HP. Take a look at what my 2002 owners manual states. It may only be 6HP but I will take it. Plus this is a U.S. SAE HP rating and not the Euro DIN rating:
Also search on E55 and dyno. There is a dyno chart that suggest the actual HP on the W211 E55 is around 512 or so.
Yeee...haaa. Thanks for that info. The beast deserves that title. Now I can't wait to smoke em if you got em. Do you think a 493 hp personalized tag on an E55 would bring too much rebuke?

where did you hear that?? fyi the sl55 had 469 when it first came out, then they upped it to 493... anyway, i dont think the e55 has 493hp but at this point, does it really make that much of a difference??
FYI, all the 5.5 supercharged V8's are the same HP rating. MB just "de-tuned" it on paper so that the S and CL Kompressor is "king" of the 5.5 supercharged, when infact, they are all the same. I believe E55 Kev posted the manual stating the HP figures a while ago.

I read somewhere that a writer stated because the exhaust couldn't be made long enough to expel all those ponies, hence the de-tuned HP.

Didn't want those 'high dollar' AMGs to get outrun by the *lowly* CLK :p
Yeah, I heard MB tried the same ratings "trick" with the N/A 55s in the previous E, and CLK.....as well as the N/A CL55 and S55.

It shows the power curve for the 5.5 L SC engine and specifically refers to the E55---rated at 500hp at 6100 RPM (lower part of text section).
If you go to the search function and type in the words "affalterbach March 2003" you'll find the photo.
I tried to attach it but the file was to large.
