pricing on E55

all,

I have my 04 55 for sale - asking 20K - but high book is $15K

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/cto/4810373193.html

I met a gent yesterday and he said based on miles (82K) and the accident last year (motorcycle hit rear) - that paying a premium for the car is hard -

wanted opinions on how hard i should push -

Or if i can get the car to $16K - should i let it go?

Opinions

How bad do you need to sell it?

Will someone give you 20K for it?
Probably

Will it sell faster at 16K than 20K?
Definitely

Don't worry what book says. It's worth whatever someone will give you for it.

how heavily does the accident impact asking price?
Ultimately i'd love to get 18K but looking for opinions.

the car has been moved to being parked outside and that drives me nuts - hate to have such a beauty sitting out in the rain - also part of my motivation to sell faster - and it has only been for sale on CL for 1 week too

Truly, I do think $16K is a tad bit on the low side, at $16K, you would probably get a few people interested which means you're a little low. I think you should wait. $18K is not unrealistic but it's a bit high, has to be a slightly impatient person. $20K is a bit unrealistic, someone who's not in tune with the market might pay $20K. I do think $17K is very fair to you though.

One week is an okay amount of time to wait. Also, in this wet weather, it's harder to sell cars.

At $16K, you should be able to find a couple takers in a week or two. Maybe even a few interested parties. But this may mean your pricing is a bit low.

Also, my suggestion; park this car near dealerships with a for sale sign. Dealerships have two things; 1, customers walking around; 2, Mercedes-Benz technicians walking around. There is a high chance a Mercedes-Benz technician would be interested in buying this car.

At my local dealership, I've been told that there are at least three technicians who would be interested in acquiring my car if I were to sell it in the near future. Since they obviously know I'm slightly OCD, the car has been well maintained, they know I'm a reasonably careful driver, and they also know I wash my cars personally. Furthermore, I've been told technicians especially like the W211 E55 because they're easy to work on, they produce insane amounts of power, they're fairly reliable (generally all M113 engines are more reliable), and easy for a technician to diagnose the problem.

I like this car...between the options and the color I think it is awesome. I think that realistically $18k should be the number but I am not sure how much the carfax will hurt it. I say this bc it was hit in the rear by a motorcycle so it shouldn't be a 'killer' for a deal. Maintenance is huge, which you said you are meticulous about but no add ons cosmetically or performance wise could hurt a little. Bottom line, forum guys want perf. mods and others don't want perf mods...I think that someone pays $18k IMO. GLWS

The accident means nothing to buyers who aren't concerned with it, provided it was repaired correctly. It means everything to some buyers , they can't sleep at night if the car in their garage has paint sprayed by other than the OE robot.

82 is good miles for an 04, and it's got nice options and an awesome color. I personally wouldn't take a penny under 18 if I were you. It probably won't sell quickly, but these are niche market cars so don't expect it to sell quickly even if you price it low. Who knows though, maybe you sell it tomorrow. Good luck!

List the car on Cars.com and that should give you a lot more exposure. Personally, I have not known anyone who ever went on CL for purchasing a car. Now, saying that most everyone I have known has purchased a new car, or high end used, so went through a specialized dealer. I am sorry but I would never get one that was listed on CL. I think CL is the place to list where your selling something large and only local, or have no other outlet to do it. Spend the money, Cars.com and provide all 30 photos and also Autotrader.com. That will get you where you need to be. Full disclosure will help. If the accident is not on the carfax don't say anything till you talk with the buyer, then put that up front to them. The mere saying accident will make people walk before even asking why. If its on the carfax then you likely will take a hit on price even if the car is perfect. That is unless you can make the buyer see that it was only something like the bumper cover or simple. Just some thoughts......

You need to be patient. Takes 3 weeks to for CL to really kick in. When I sold my G35 few weeks ago, I was just too rush. After I sold it, I get 2 text and phone calls every day asking the car. Be patient, you should able to get $18K. Good luck !

Past 4 cars that sold in Houston were right around $16500. Two 05's had 90K miles. Two had right around 100K miles.

I just saw a 70K mile '05 today. I physically went to look at it. $20,500 is asking.

The '05 E55 I purchased last summer was immaculate, had 77K miles with all maintenance records, and a $20K asking price. I offered $18.8K (to keep total price under $20K with tax) and the offer was accepted. I was the only person to make a serious offer on the car after two weeks on Craigslist.

$20K is too high for yours IMO.

FWIW.

Gorgeous car, you will sell it, just be patient. Pricing it too low won't make it sell faster. As mentioned this is a niche market used cars. 20 or best reasonable offer someone will buy it. Just hang tite. It could take a few weeks or a few months to be realistic. Stick to your guns someone serious will come along. GL!

thanks all for comments - i think realistically if someone offered me 17K i'd take it - really don't want it sitting outside for too long. I know the weather sucks which will slow the sale too, but have a callback with a pretty serious gent tomorrow who came to look at it on Friday afternoon.

He offered me high book ($15.5) but will see if we can get more.

i did a search on auto trader and there are only 17 E55 for sale within a 500 mile radius and only 2 under 100K miles.

I have had a few others come by and are interested and we are supposed to chat tomorrow too

And i think most would want a stock car that has not been tracked - but that could just be me

Nice, what I want to do know is what car took the place of your E55 in the garage?

I think CL is a great place to sell a car because it is local and people can see the car. Let's face it, these cars are coming down into prices that make them affordable for the younger generation and who searches CL the most? The younger gen! You price is priced to ACTUALLY sell the car so CL works fine. You seem like me, you WANT to sell the car and at the price that you are willing to take...you will sell the car. My 06 with 92k mi, that I just bought, was a good deal I thought at $17500 and I have gone through the car to make everything perfect for $2k so I now have $20k in the car with shipping it and I think I am doing pretty good. You guys are making me feel like I paid too much! lol...Not that I care, it's the car I wanted and it is now mint throughout. You will sell your car fast and if 'that' guy is coming back then he will pay $17k or $16500 and I am sure you will sell it. Good luck again and keep us posted.

I replaced it with a 15 GL350 (soon to be chipped '304hp/583tq' after 1K miles) for the wife to haul the kids around - i tried telling her we are good for another 80K miles - since fixing everything as of late, but we need something bigger.

I do have to say that having owned this car for 9 years has been the longest I have owned any car - typically they are gone within 3 years. I'm sure I will be sad when it sells, but am stoked someone else will get to enjoy it!!!

Luckily we still have the 08 E63 Wagon that should be getting the headers installed/tune done shortly.

GL are really nice congrats! Didn't see you had the E63 estate. I don't feel sorry for you at all. Enjoy them both in good health.
