E63 Eating Oil...Normal?

Good Evening,

My 09' E63 with 48k miles popped up the "Check Oil Level At Next Refueling" notice this morning. After some quick research this is "normal" for these engines?

Is this true? Is this a reason for concern? I checked the oil and it was below the funky red Max/Min indicators on the dipstick, so it appears I am at least .5-1 quart low. I have no oil leaks and drive the car daily.

Also, what oil does this sucker take, Mobil 1 5w40 ESP or 0W40 Euro?

Thanks!

0-40w euro Mobil One, you can get 5qts at Walmart for 25$. The one piece of information you did not give, was how many miles has it been since your last oil change. .5qt or so every 10k is not bad, I think most 63 motors burn oil. Both of mine never had the light come on, but I change mine about every 5k miles or so. Basically whenever I feel like it, I do it. Just make sure you use the actual Merc filter, it is better and the cost is comparable to others.

Thank you for the reply. I bought the car from CarMax with 41k miles and I believe the oil was changed at 40k as part of the 40k service. I still to this day don't know why it was not a CPO (previous lease). I had an MB CPO-like inspection done on the car after purchase and they said it was flawless.

I am planning to add .5quarts or so and then take it in for service at 50k in a few months. I just worry that there is something else wrong with the car. I have a 5 year, 120k mile Extended Carmax Warranty, so I should be covered for most major issues, but it would be a real bummer if there was something amiss.

I noticed this issue on my CLS63, and got concerned. What I found out by taking it to my indy was the intake area was leaking oil. A very slow leak mind you, and it took them about an hour to replace the part, and the bolts could only be used once so they had to get new ones when replaced. Cost was around $800, parts and labor. Dealer of course will be much higher.

After that, no more adding oil, no more random CEL coming on. Might check into that. Did you look at the valve cover gaskets BTW?

mine is currently seeping oil through the oil pan mating surface. if it gets worse i'll have to pull it and redo the liquid gasket. besides that my car isn't currently consuming any oil to my knowledge. 93k miles, been using Motul 6100 10w30 since 89k, just had a fresh oil change and added Liqui Moly Friction Modifier as well.

supposedly some on bob is the oil guy have reported that the addition of Liqui Moly has reduced oil consumption by 50% as well as improved sealing which adding in power production.

i do have to report that the butt dyno agree's, power has improved. since owning the car i've been driving like a madman as well. coworkers all think i'm the worst driver on the road as i tend to use all 507hp daily.

If you have the ability to do so, I'd pull a couple random plugs and check for oil. Just to be sure.

I just added about 2/3 a quart of Mobil 1 0w40 Euro. The dipstick sucks. It's bent multiple ways and never gives me a warm and fuzzy reading. I checked about 5 times each time I added a little and it appeared to get me in the middle/upper end of the red min/max. I'll start it up tomorrow and see how it goes.

Btw- the oil is pretty dirty.

Update: Drove around for 15 minutes and the message did not come up. Looks like adding the oil worked, but I will now monitor for oil consumption.

I don't trust any dealer changing oil when selling. They all say the car had a oil change, but do they really. I am pretty sure most do not replace the copper gasket washer, and wonder if the oil filter really gets done too. Probably a drain and fill type of deal. thinking about expenses, they would have to get parts for every car they get in, where a drain and fill only variety of oil stored. I have been super surprised at how dirty oil was several times. Then I change it and 6-8k later its still clean. So for me my theory stands......... Even dealer change specials $125 its a deal to get done right now, or even Jiffy lube but bring all parts yourself and you get out for 100 total. Peace of mind IMHO.

IIRC- the MB dealer indicated that the oil had been changed at the 40k service, per their database. The car was a lease and had all service done at MB. I probably should have had the oil changed as a precaution when I had MB look it over. However, I agree with you regarding dealers/auto service ethics. I've always performed regular and advanced maintenance on my cars until I started having kids and advanced myself financially. I've pulled the tranny off my GTS, but that car is also easy to work on. I'm affraid of the E63, but perhaps I'll grab a manual and start wrenching. Pretty sure I will do the rotors and brakes myself since here it's $1k labor.

I'll be taking the car in for the 50k service in 1600 miles, but I may change the oil before then and I will have them take a look for Oil leaks. I think it's time to get that lift I've been wanting.

Oil Change on the 63 is easy. If the front is tilted up, just the back lug on the pan will drain about 8.5 qts. Once drained (make sure the oil filter cap up front is loose to allow the oil to drain fully into the pan) then tighten the lug with a new copper crush washer. They remove the old filter, tighten and add approx. 8.5 qts then check the stick. 8.5 does it every time for me. Full change w filter costs me $58US. I do it about every 5-6k miles, or so. Its too cheap a maintenance item to not do, takes 20min, and even service indicator allows for 10-12k miles but I start to worry about it getting dirty around 7-8k. I've seen the oil at 6k and its about perfectly clean still, and seen it at 10k and its black. So like I said peace of mind and cheap. Plus I like to tinker a little and its a good excuse. But what do I know, lol I am on my third Merc in a year and second 63. I love them.

@SherriffDep, agree with what you say but I have personally always drained the oil cooler under the rad and have replaced the washer as well, then refill with 9.5 liters.
No issues so far on either car.

So I took my car to the dealer and had them do a lots of tests (pressure test, headbolt inspection, visuals, etc). I wanted to make sure there was nothing wrong with the car. Everything came back normal. I spoke with a couple mechanics and they said all mercedes go through fluids (oil, coolant, etc). My service rep said the new GLs need coolant top off every 4 months.

Btw, due to personal reasons I am going to sell my car. I'll probably take it to Carmax. Anyone interested? 09, E63, 58k miles. Almost new tires, great condition.
