I don't have the smell of gas in the cabin yet, but want to replace all necessary parts for preventative measures. I'm thinking I could probably order the parts and have an independent mechanic install the parts, then put a warranty claim through MBUSA to reimburse for parts and labor. Has anyone gone this route?

Be carful with having the dealer check for you. Some dealers are charging a diagnostic fee if there's no need to change them out.
Check yourself by opening the panel and take pics if it's leaking.

Looks like I'm going in tomorrow. Everything was fine with the car until it was not. Bad smell, and even fuel puddling under the car last time I filled it all the way up.
Guy said there was a warranty, but I forgot to verify whether it was "tank" or "fuel components" Does that distinction still apply?
I'm at 130k miles. about time to have the pump and sender replaced.

Thanks to everyone on this thread. This site ROCKS! I noticed a strong ordo several days ago and went bonkers looking for a leak. Actually skedded an appointment with an indie until I searched out this thread. Heading over to Rusnak Arcadia (CA) now and will report on the outcome.

Hey everybody!
My US-spec E55 is registered in Germany.
Does anyone also has an US-spec car in Germany/Europe an the extended warranty paid the rework of the fuel leak issue?

I can't believe these things are still on back order at some dealerships, every dealership by July was supposed to be stocked up.
They better have them in stock because they have many years to warranty

I'm unclear as to what parts other than the re-engineered tank have been ordered, or if the tank and other parts are all inclusive. Maybe someone can clarify.
There's a 2nd vehicle at Rusnak waiting for the same operation. Mine has been branded 'critical', unsafe to drive, which I understand will put a wriggle in the delivery time.

There are 2 different symptoms leading to the same problem. One is the fuel sender/pump unit. The other one has to do with the tank.
In most cases they just have to replace one or both fuel sender/pump units to fix the problem. Others have a problem which requires to get the tank and the sender units replaced.
In my case it was one sender unit but because the fuel filters are attached as well he said he would replace both since MBUSA doesn't check. So I got both units replaced for free.
One reason why the tanks are on back order could be the fact that U.S. spec cars have steel tanks in whereas the cars for all other countries have plastic tanks assembled. This has to do with the stricter ULEV/SULEV (Ultra Low Emission Vehicle/Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle) certification of the U.S. They might only have so many in stock and the supplier needs to make them in charges in between other parts. This of course is only my best guess.

Can you please post a link to the letter from MB ref this recall. The link on the first page does not work. I need the letter or the local stealer will refuse to do the work. thank you.

I'll need to clarify wtf the situation is, but a 're-engineered' tank was mentioned. It appears elsewhere in this forum that a seal is sometimes compromised results of ethanol in the U.S. gas formula which kicks off a chain of events. I can't see how a steel tank can crack, but MB sometimes works in strange ways.

...and actually I understand there is no recall as that would be an admission of guilt.

I could post the letter but would have to black out my personal information. But in your case I would report this particular stealership to MBUSA. I. Sure they informed every single one about this recall. This is not up to the individual dealership, this is an official recall. Fight for your rights people!!!
