Gas Smell- Fixed at the dealer under warranty

I had gas smell, in and around my 2007 E63AMG, took her to the dealership after reading this thread, and got it fixed, replace the gas tank and all that jazz for FREE at my local dealership.

thanks MB Forums!

2005 E55 AMG
Just purchased a 2005 E55 with 42K miles. I'm getting the gas tank repair/swap out. What are the correct part numbers for the pieces to do this? The dealer communicated these are the items being swapped out:
Tank
Jumper Harness
Various Seals

I got this done on my 07 E63 2 weeks ago, the MB dealership should know all the parts.

The tank will be replaced as a system. What they do *not* replace, however, is the fuel pump relay. That relay I regard as the 2003 through 2005 E55's weakest point. Replace the relay whether or not it looks bad. Replace the socket if it shows signs over overheating.
Verify with your own eyes the tech installed the adapter harness to the fuel pumps on the passenger side.

Depending on the exact build date you might need way more parts. If your car has the single fuel pump relay cable harness you need way more parts. Look up my posts about this issue and you’ll find out our car almost went up in flames because of MB. I know if at least two E55 and an SL55 that burned up because they didn’t replace the correct 2 replay harness.

EPC lists about 10+ required parts that they would sell to you at the counter if you would buy the new pumps yourself. But being MB and trying to be as cheap as possible they leave important parts out.

I called 1 dealer and the person didn't want to check the VIN as he had 'never heard of that issue'. Said I had to bring the car in to pay a diagnostic fee first. The fuel smell got to the point where I couldn't drive the car anymore and I got in the habit of only filling 1/2 tank. So I took a look myself and found a nice puddle of fuel. Thinking it would be an easy fix, I did take it upon myself to replace the sending unit gasket as I thought that could be the source based on the location of the sitting fuel. But that apparently wasn't the source. After replacing it, I filled up again and this time could see where the tank was damp. Looked like it was coming from higher up under the sheetmetal. So I tried to call another dealer and the lady I spoke to had heard of it, ran my VIN and confirmed it was covered issue. It's still there now for the last week waiting on a new tank, but at least they gave me a loaner: '20 A220 4matic. So they can keep my car as long as they need

Had my '05 in for inspection of the fuel leak. It was definitely present on both sides upon checking under the rear seat. Seven days in the shop (with a loaner GLB for me to use) and I picked it up today. New fuel tank, fuel pump, FSUs, etc. The invoice showed to me was over two thousand dollars in parts and about seven hours of labor. I'm so glad it was in the warranty coverage period!

Slobo - What part of the tank is this and how did you get to it? Did you have to drop the tank? Thanks

Slobo is in Europe where there is no extended warranty. If you’re in the US and within the 15 years, get it repacked free of charge instead of gluing it.

Greetings go out to my buddy Slobo How you doing bud?

2004 MB E55
I just purchase a 2004 e55 with 95k miles. I have owned the car for over two weeks now. I filled up my tank on Saturday for the first time and smelled the gas next morning. Anyone have any experiences trying to get MB to warranty the fuel issue outside the 15 years?

I have not heard that MB will do it if it’s past of the 15 years.

But why don’t you call around and ask them? Only the dealerships can give you a solid answer to that question as they are the one who do it.

Good luck.

What were the symptoms that you reported to the dealer? Did the dealer replace the unit right away or did you have to wait for an inspection?

I didn't know about this issue until now and doubt the dealership will pay for the repairs on my 04 E55.

The only problem I'm having is when I try to put gas in the car. It always stops the pump or starts to overflow. I attributed this to the stupid safety emissions mechanisms that they put on the pumps in California, Oregon, Washington, etc., because I don't really have the same problem when I pump gas in Arizona.

Now I'm wondering if it's a gas tank issue...

Not so fast. Take it to a dealer if you smell gasoline in the interior, and ask them to take a look. If they see the vents are leaking, there is a very good chance you will get a loaner for two weeks and a replacement of your gas tank, no charge. This happened to me 3 years ago with a 2006 E55.

Not so fast. The extended warranty is for 15 years and starts with the first sale of a vehicle. He’s clearly out of the 15 years.

But that being said, go shop around. Go to different dealerships. Some actually fight for customers and know how to get good will requests with MBUSA approved. Others are slackers and don’t give a **** about customers.

I called Palm Springs Mercedes and was told that there isn't an "open recall."

Considering their history of poor customer service, this result wasn't too surprising.

There is now a very strong and noticeable gasoline smell.

I'm pretty pissed off that this recall wasn't resolved and now it's too late.

Even if it had been done, it might have come back.
I had my tank replaced under warranty, and believe it is having the vent issue again... Wish they would honor the warranty outside of 15 yrs on a already replaced tank.

Try MB of Escondido, and San Diego. Worth a phone call at least.
