Wasn't my intention. But if it smells, most likely it's going to be pooling.

A Merc
Not all the time
Sometimes it pools near the middle of the tank and you can't see it but easily smell it

Mercedes extended warranty is for fuel leaking or fuel smell. Just smell should be enough for them to at least inspect the car free of charge.

But, it's really helpful to verify the problem yourself before bringing in. My buddy had his fuel pump documented as 'working' by the dealer, even though it had a giant pool of fuel on it.

Friend is at Fletcher Jones Mercedes right now and is getting scammed by the dealer about a $170 charge to "inspect" his entire fuel system on a completely stock E55 while they do the recall. Anyone else experienced this?

Call Mercedes USA customer phone number. He should not pay anything if the fuel system is leaking.

Leaving this here for anyone that needs it. Don't call MB USA, they won't do anything. You have to take it to the dealer. Documentation helps..

"Mercedes told NHTSA on Sept. 4 it will extend the original warranty coverage to 15 years and unlimited mileage on "Covered Fuel Tank Components" in 2003-2009 E-Class vehicles in and 2006-2011 CLS-Class vehicles. Fuel tank components for the warranty extension include the fuel tank, fuel filter/sender, fuel pump, and all related gaskets/seals and retention rings. That letter was made public in recent days by NHTSA."

Jelneb I have only positive to say about MBUSA. We too had an issue with a lazy service advisor who gave false information to us about this, processed the claim wrong and tried to cover his mess up. 2 phone calls with MBUSA and the check was on the way to us.

The recall letter was from 2008, and all they did was replace the fuel sender with another one that also leaked. Mercedes has known about this fuel system design issue for a long time, and has somehow avoided a proper recall to fix the issue. Only after NHTSA investigated did they do a voluntary warranty extension.

Ya I tried calling in advance. That's how it should work but I'm not sure if you're always able to get through. It was easier for me to call a couple dealers to find one that would honor the extended warranty. Sucks you had to go through all of that but good to know you actually got a response!

I guess my situation was a little different. Went to dealership and asked for the warranty repair. They told us it was done already and they would charge us $1700. That was a no go for us bc the smell was so bad that we got headaches after a few minutes in the car.

Went to my friend who has a MB certified repair shop. He did the repair (only the pumps and sender units on both sides). I was happy with the repair and didn't think much of it.

I went to a different dealership and requested the check. I gave them copies of all the paperwork that was needed per the letter. The SA submitted the paperwork, but the paperwork stated it was a repair instead of a leak issue. MBUSA denied it because it was phrased wrong. The SA told us we need to contact MBUSA. We did. They told us they denied it bc it wasn't a leak but just a repair. We told them no it's a leak and it was documented as a leak with the first dealership, and we had that documentation with the wording. We scanned all I'd that and emailed it to MBUSA. They then told us ok that's good but we need to go through the dealership again. We called the dealership and told them fix the wording and sum it it again. The SA was too lazy (just our opinion based of other lazy issues with had with him) and wanted us to do the run around. So MBUSA called him and told him to move his *** and file it for his customer.

JoeNobody told me then here that the repair should have included the gas tank and what not. I wasn't really concerned about it but later on the more I communicated with Nobidy here thought ok why not taking advantage of the extended warranty now instead of waiting. So we had to take the car in anyways and I stated what happened and we weren't happy but we need to get the complete warranty repair done. So they took care of it and finished basically up what was still needed.

All in all it was a little of a PITA but now it's done for a few months and we are happy.

Take it in immediately. If you encounter resistance, depending on where you are, find a dealer that's cooperative.

Read this entire thread as it's very informative and will give you the straight story.

What do you think? Why do you think it's not ok to bring it in?

2016 E63s Wagon - CCB & CF package
Looks like I'll be calling MB tomorrow.

CEL came up for P0456 (small evap leak) and being an E55 i checked the pumps. Sure enough, the passenger side pump has a crack and a leak. Started smelling fuel faintly as i was undoing the cover.

MB took care of the SBC issue on my E320 without any hesitation, so i hope this goes just as smoothly.

What model year and how many miles did the car have when you got the SBC replaced?

It was a 2004 E320 with 110k miles. This was 3 years ago, in 2013. It was 9 years and 9 months old at the time so still under the 10 year mark.

My current E55 is low mileage, but it is over 10 yrs old so i do worry about that every time i drive it. Although, resetting the counter seems to be more and more common now a days...

Hey guys,
Glad to see this thread is still active. I have a 2005 C55 AMG and I just had the same leak you guys have been experiencing. I have it well documented and I have contacted MBUSA but haven't received any support about it since the C-class wasn't included in this problem but the design of our AMG fuel system is the same the part numbers are just different. Anyways, I am reporting it through NHTSA but was just curious if you guys had a tally of how many vehicles have been having issues outside of the E-class and CLS-class that were included in the warranty extension?

I'd make a stink. Since my replacement I had to return to have a coupling torqued down whereas it initially was left loose. Now my indie diagnosed an evaporative fuel system leak, check engine light on. It never ends, only the car is such a dream to drive. Just changed out the trans fluid and replaced the pilot bushing. Man, what a difference in driveability, speed, power, shifting...

I replaced mine myself way back and did a DIY. Unfortunately, I did not keep the receipts or anything. I also repaired the passenger side which was starting to leak .. filling it with Permatex.

I recently acquired a 320 CDI and it has the leak issue and of course it is not covered under warranty. I can't win for losing .. looks like I will have to DIY again. Honestly it is the same issue, I don't understand why they are selective on VIN numbers.

If anyone has old leaky senders/pumps that they don't want (for an E55), I will put them into my E55 and make MB fix it like they should've the first time!

Took my car to the dealer and just told them about the smell. Service guy told me they will take care of it free of charge and I may get a new tank. Called me back 3 hours later and said I am in fact getting a whole new tank and it's in stock. Hoping to get the car back today or tomorrow.

Well... here's what happened.

My CEL came on... (perhaps my nose is dull and I couldn't smell anything...)

I take my car to the dealership and they run tests all day, and my SA tells me "Fuel pump / fuel sending unit", needs to be worked on but it would cost approx $2800.

I inquired if it is covered under the fuel leak issue... and the dealership is saying no... because of the fact that I brought the car in because of "CEL illuminated".

They are still checking on it...

What are your thoughts?
