The best/worst of the W211 AMG's

Hey guys,
I currently drive a w210 E320, for obvious reasons you already know, it's time I become a true Mercedes enthusiust by adding the 3 beautiful letters, AMG!
This is were you guys come in, are there any years, options, anything I should be leaning towards or away from?
From what Ive been able to gather, I prefer a 2006 onward based purely off cosmetics. But that's as far as it goes, I know nothing more of the internals. Only what the dealers have said, I take thier info as being bias though. Hopefully you guys can help point me in the right direction and stop me from going the wrong!
In advance, I appreciate all your input info and opinions. Hopefully with things going my way, it won't be long until you hear from me again, only this time as a AMG owner!

I assume you mean 2007 onward as the exterior of the 2003-2006 was the same.

2007+ is a completely different motor than the 2003-2006 models.

Normally aspirated vs. supercharged. Not a trivial change... The personality is quite different between them.

I have not drove an 07 and up. I can say the 03-06'supercharged cars drive like a nice luxury car. It's very smooth and mild but when you lay into the throttle it becomes an explosive beast. I like it myself but some like the muscle car sound and feel I would imagine the 07 and up have. They are two different animals.

Everyone has different taste. The look of the 2007+ to me is more aggressive and more appealing. The performance of the 2003-2006 for the ability to add mods is most appealing. Beyond airmatic and fuel pumps leaking mine has been pretty much trouble free .. now just awaiting the dreaded SBC. I have an 05 with facelift .. just the way I like it and enjoy driving it every day! although I have kind of run out of retrofits to do .. not sure what to do next.

2006 E55 and 2002 E320
Original Poster: What are you looking for? Straight line speed? Reliability? Aesthetics? If you want an 07 or later AMG, you only have the E63 as your option.

Internally, the M156 engine in the 2007-2009 W211 E63 is a nice sounding engine. There are "head bolt" issues with the engine that end up becoming very expensive repairs.

Some say the 2005-2006 E55s are supposedly the more reliable W211 AMGs, 2003 cars were the first year of the introduction of the W211 chassis and some have experienced some small issues. Personally, I love the W210 E55 AMG 2001/2002 would be my favorite years.

E55 Pros: Really fast even by today's standards, fairly reliable if in the later years, highly reliable engine with a supercharger, really torquey engine.
Cons: aesthetically may not look as good as the E63.

E63 Pros: aesthetics, bespoke engine, nicer sound from engine (subjective), newer car.
Cons: engine reliability issues. Some would say the E55 is faster than the E63 (I think this is debatable, but it's definitely true if the car is modified, an E55 would usually be faster).

The E55 also has the 5-speed regular automatic whereas the 2006 e63 has the 7G (but not the MCT). I think it's safe to say that if repairs are your major concern the 5-speed would be your preference.

Right and the 5 speed is more or less bulletproof.
I'd always say get a 55K, slightly mod it, add facelift front apron/hood/headlights/whatever is missing and be good to go for relatively low money.

Did I say something wrong? Here are references to the term facelift with regard to W211:

I'm still unsure what changed on the E55 during a facelift. Everything I saw mentioned in those links were either changes on the lower models or the E55 > E63 transition.

I'm not calling you out, but curious since I had never heard the facelift term being applied to the middle of the E55 model years, unless you're saying you applied the E63 body pieces to your E55.

In 2006, it was still an E55. The E63 started in 2007.

Can you clarify? So they have some e55s with the 7-speed?

No sir, the 7-speed wasn't spec'd for the E55 level of torque. '06 is still the 5 speed.
