Losing To Cars That I shouldn't be???
Hey guys,
Quick intro, I have a 2006 E55 with 37k miles. Only mods are drop in K&n's and 2nd cats and resonator delete. Recent maintaince included all new fluids and filters, new plugs, both belts, and new SC bearing. The car had been sitting for a year before I got it.
Recently I ran against a new Q50 Infiniti (I think 328hp) off of a red light. My tires spun for about a second and he took a full length car lead. It stayed the exact same distance until we both had to brake (around 80-90mph).
Tonight I just ran against my friend's brand new 435i coupe. Again the exact same thing. I spun the tires a little more this time but the car didn't catch up. I couldn't believe it.
I know that I have a fuel leak (strong smell by rear driver side wheel) and I have a vacuum leak somewhere near the power steering pump (hissing sound).
But is it possible to lose that much power with just those problems?? These cars are low 300hp cars. I should be killing them.
Thoughts?

if the I/C pump isn't working the S/C pulley won't engage which means your S/C isn't working and you're trying to go fast naturally aspirated. This would explain why those other cars are pulling on you. Also, the I/C pump does nothing to influence engine temp...that's the water pump and thermostats job.
I/C pump is pretty cheap and the labor isn't too bad. Hopefully this is the problem as its a pretty easy fix.

The thing is I heard the supercharger when I took off. So is it possible it engages at first and then shuts off?

dynoed with a failed pump and 400 to the wheels (with a pulley & tune)
replaced IC pump 448HP to the wheels (same pulley & same tune)
your gas smell is probably the fuel pumps needing replaced - see the sticky
definitely check the vacuum leak too
i think eventually the S/C will go into limp mode at a certain temp...

Wow, that's a lot. But even still, lets say I lost 50-60hp due to the pump, I would still expect to catch up and pass both cars with 409hp... or am I wrong?

You have to understand, the I/C pump is *essential*. If you're running NA you're SOL.

Take it to the track, see what you're running, and if you are trapping <108 MPH, check your ic pump first, and go from there. Those above mentioned cars are trapping about that MPH, that's why you can not accelerate past them.

This seems like an awesome post... only thing is I have no clue what trapping is lol. Can you please tell me what you meant by "trapping about that MPH" cause I really want to know why I couldn't catch them.

Along with what everyone else is saying, you need to be very familiar with your car. By that, I mean how it acts under certain conditions, what the car wants to make it run the fastest, etc. And, racing is NEVER about who has the fastest car, it is who gets to the end of the race first. On the street where lower power cars or cars with AWD (ie better traction) will always have a very big advantage. And as mentioned above, the more transmission gears, the better and with ours only having 4 forward gear, we are really at a disadvantage over the newer cars that have 6 and 7 forward gears.
Once you get things sorted out with your car, you should beat those guys easily.

I would say your heat soaked and your car is pulling timing. IC pump most likely.
No way you should lose to a Q50. At this point I wouldn't be running anyone until its fixed.
You should easily feel that much of a power loss.

Exactly what I was thinking. This should have been noticed on the test drive before even buying the car.
