how to install facelift steering wheel on pre 05?
What does it take to install the facelift steering wheel on a pre 05 W211? I've been told the indicator stalk, cruise control stalk and steering wheel adjust stalk thing needs to be replaced....
Anyone done it?

yep.
yeah the clockspring and what you already mentioned will need to be changed out. a wiring harness will need to be purchased to make your "electronics" like that of the 2005-06 model cars. ebay will be a great source for an 2005-06 stalk/clockspring, wiring harness from mercedes and somewhere here on mbworld the wiring hook-up has been detailed out. from there soldering and putting it all together. not bad scale 1-10, about 6.

So basically I should find the whole ring-like assembly that has the stalks sitting on it from a wrecked facelift car. Does this assembly include the clockspring?Can the clockspring be used from a pre-facelift?

yep...
yes the clockspring should be inside the stalk, and make sure the airbag connectors are there. you want to get one of these from a car that did not have front steering wheel airbag that's deployed. that clockspring may very well is broken and sometimes even the airbag connectors are ruined. so just make sure its from a rear end damaged car. best to look on ebay also, that's where I got my set up from.

one way is to go into the steering wheel itself or let me ask: do you have the clam shell center console or the roll up?? the rollup was the updated electronics.

clockspring question...
the clockspring cannot be used from a preface lift vehicle. better way to say or describe what you will need is the following: the steering stalk with the turn signals/wipers/cruise control and some have the voice activation stick also with the clockspring of that same unit that would have the airbag connectors. this whole "stalk" assembly is removed by a torx screw under the stalk, as you loosen the screw (it does not come out) it loosens enough for the whole stalk to slide off the steering column. this whole assembly is what will have the clockspring w/ airbag connectors, and the various switches (turn/wipers etc) and you will install this whole part on your car. look for 2005-2007 e class vehicles they would have the upgraded electronics that you will need. when you remove your stalk, take pics of how your wire loom is placed and where the zip ties are at in relation to steering column and lower dash, the new "wiring harness" will be longer once installed and you want to make sure you have it tie out of the way. basically the electronics is within the "stalk", reason why you cannot use the clockspring from the "older" or "preface lift" (your ) car. hope this helped.

type this item number in ebay search field and you will see a picture of what you will need to get and what you will be looking at. in the first pic, there is a hole there almost on its side, thats the hole that has the torx screw to loosen and remove the stalk. good luck!

I understand that you need the indicator stalk/cruise control assembly but I'm not sure why? Which component is not compatible, is it the stalks themselves or a module between them 
The whole assembly, working and from post 06 is pretty rare and expensive and so is the clock-spring. I would hate to replace something I didn't need to. So does anyone know what exactly is incompatible?

you want it to work!!
no one has done the actual individual wiring connection between the wipers/turn signal/cruise control etc etc..... the "stalk" has the connection inside and no has done each individual wiring connection to see if the pre 05 are the same as the 05-06..... that would be a lot of work and being that the "new" wiring harness has different pins that you already have to switch the wiring for from your car to the "new" wiring harness, its been much easier to source a "stalk" and KNOW everything will work than to "rediscover" the wheel and have something go terribly wrong when you turn ignition on..... the stalk are rare but keep your eyes open and consider this: I was able to source the stalk (all wipers/turn/cruise etc etc) from a 05 with the clockspring (airbag connectors intact) for $105 shipped off ebay. wiring harness bought off ebay for $24. other than sourcing the steering wheel, the whole conversion costed less than $130!!!! now keep in mind, I did all the soldering of wires, taking the steering column apart to get to the plug and putting it all back together but when finished: everything worked!! horn, all signal switches, paddles etc etc.... so if you are willing to be patient, you two can do the same!!! and if you are serious, I can help locate a "stalk" for you. I work the graveyard shift, love surfing and looking for odds and ends. just let me know, but realize: I don't think its that expensive at all!!!! good luck!

Do you have a part number for the harness that you have to replace?
I already know how to take apart, the interior, in fact, it's already apart and I have an E63 wheel and airbag that's why I was intrigued but do you have to do soldering

OK so I'll manage the soldering. If I buy from the wreckers though and they can't confirm it being from a rear ended rather than front ended car, what should I do? How do I confirm they work?

easiest way to tell for sure is look at the airbag connectors, often times the connectors are fried and broken due to the explosion of the airbag when it goes off. and the clockspring will be broken also if the airbag has deployed. but instead of going to the wreckers, man just use ebay. they are good and have good prices too. and if you find that somethings not right, you can get your money back.... i would not risk going thru all this work and you not knowing for sure. good luck man!!!

here are some alternatives: 2005-2006... clk550, s550, cls63, clk3, s63,w211 e550 , w211 e55 , cls500. this should give you a good choice to choose from.....
