Radiator Fan failed.. found an Alternative!

Hi all,

So the other day i approached my E55 AMG to see fluid of some sort had leaked at the front of the car. upon swiping it with my finger and giving it a smell, i freaked out thinking it was my supercharger leaking because the fluid smelled exactly like the supercharger fluid (manure from a barn)

I did a quick search and came across a thread where someone else had this issue and turned out to be the AUX fan (Radiator fan).
The electronics that power this allmighty 600W fan are integrated within the motor in a sealed compartment with Dielectric fluid keeping them cool.

However over time the seal lets go and the fluid leaks. the fan continues to work until the hot summer days then the electronics will fry and then you will have all sorts of heating issues.

So anyways, i began searching for another fan. all the fans i found were 300-400+ on e bay and up to 700 from local wreckers!!.

I took the motor out and spoke with my uncle who is a BMW fanatic and he said.. Oh thats the same as the BMW E60 5 series.

he gave me a spare he had and what do you know? EXACTLY THE SAME! same plug, same wires. PLUG AND PLAY.

The only thing i needed to do was remove the motor from the BMW Shroud and place it in the W211 one. WOLA!

Other differences i found was the blades on the fan of the BMW were a bit wider. see pictures.

SO anyways, if your fan fails, look for BMW E60 5 series 2002-2006 (after that they revised the entire cooling system and no longer use that setup) Mercedes did the same. (after all BOCH mades the fans for both companies )

BMW fans are much cheaper!

Sweet find! Is it possible to just swap out the motors or better to swap out the fan blades as well?

You can swap out the fan blades, both blades are fixed onto the motor using 3 screws. I just retained the BMW one thinking it might push more air compared to the E55 stock one. I'm an electrical engineer, not an automotive / aviation engineer, so i would not have a clue if what i assumed is true or not about the blades haha.

I would think it is, because Mercedes Benz uses the same fan on the E55 AMG and the E500, E350, E320.

Is it wired to spin the blades the correct direction? One of my Jeep buddies just had an issue with his aftermarket fan spinning backwards because the plug was missing a resistor required for installation in his ride.

Yeah, that was the first thing i checked as i wasn't sure if BMW had a PULL or PUSH setup. taking the blade style in consideration and the direction of rotation (RIGHT) its easy to tell that its a PULL type. Both blades have direction arrows pointing to the the right also.

Ok, so visually it is supposed to spin the correct direction, but did you actually verify it after plugging it in?

Its impressive how people on this forums always seem look for argument or even full mouth fights...

Anyway, Xpresion. Are you a 100% sure it has the same Watt ? Because i read in the FSM that the fan our cars use were enlarged in power/watt over "ordinary" fans of that type.

That's interesting, are you able to link me it? it seems very odd for BOSCH or any other manufacturing company big like BOSCH to make a specific motor line up for 1 model of car. I believe read 600W on the BMW motor as well.

within the next week or so will be removing the radiator fan again as i beleive i am experiencing coolant leak where i performed the split cooling, seems that i may not have done the clamps tight enough as they only drip when the car is running very warm.

I will take a picture of the BMW motor when i remove the fan.

P.S My car has renntech stage one on it and over the weekend i was out on a cruise and gave the car some real abuse, the temps never reached over 90deg Celsius while driving. However, when i left it parked idling after driving it hard it did creep to 95 deg but i guess it was heat soaked?.

Ok so a few things to mention.

Here is the Mercedes Benz Fan Motor (same used across E320/ E500/ E55 models)

Here is the BMW E60 335i series motor and a its found on a few other models (sorry i don't know which ones exactly)

What i also found is this Ebay link and it seems very appealing. **Lifetime warranty** ??

Brand new OEM spec fan + Assembly with lifetime warranty!

I'm curious about the difference in the last digit of the Bosch part number
