E63 Transmission stuck . Limp mode?

Hi guys so this has been happening recently and want to see if you guys have any clue what it is or point me in the right direction before i go to the mechanic.

So basically at random times ( happens at least once every two weeks ) the car gets stuck in the highest gear the car was before it decided to get stuck. But all you have to do to "fix it" is turn off the car and turn it back on , and back to normal.

I looked up similar problems and people say its the car going into limp mode but I thought limp mode only meant it goes into 2nd gear . But when this happens to me I switch it to manual to check the current gear and sometimes its 6th or 3rd or whatever what gear it was before it got stuck.

Any ideas on what it is? Or does limp mode not necessarily always have to go to second? Thanks everyone!

I hope its limp mode because that can be an easy conductor plate fix.

Hi

I'm at 69k miles. I'm getting odd shifts here and there as well. I'm still deciding if I need a transmission fluid change or flush. I hear a flush causes more issues as it loosens tranny parts and removes lubrication.

It seems your car is hinting/addressing it's you who should seek a doctor for the limp mode problem.

First thing is buy a proper transmission dipstick and make sure the oil level is just right. Difficult to do right.

don't think 63's had .6 transmissions-only .9's.

My bad, you're right - no dipstick.

I simply meant the oil level had to be right. No point trying to do any other trouble-shooting otherwise.

I believe the 722.9 is filled from underneath until it overflows. Who thought of that, huh?

I presume the oil must be hot - the level varies considerable with temperature.

Correct, temperature needs to be operating. And yes when it overflows out your are good to go. Could also need a software update-not likely but possible.
