hahaha I just cannot believe how cheap the E55s have gotten over there in the US. It's ridiculous. It's an incredible car!! Are these cars the best bang-for-your-buck or what?!!

I'd say it's between these 3 ($ to $$$):
1. Audi S4 Stage 3
2. W211 E55
3. 996 Turbo
Third one I can agree with but there is NO COMPARISON between an E55 and an S4. The E55 is in a different league, inside, outside, presence, status.
I think you ment speed though so I think I didn't get that.
Status? The E55 had status at one point, but if your trying to say an E55 is a status symbol these days that's laughable. The have a place in time and that's a fact, but if your in the crowd of European car owners "meaning the people whom purchase these cars new not used market" they don't get any respect as far as impressing those people. Look you can buy these things for dirt cheap. Status is pretty much gone for an E55 owner. Just because there still worth more in Australia should not be the measure of status.

Mine still gets parked out front regularly at places you wouldn't think it would... Example - this week at the Mandarin Hotel in Buckhead... Then again, the doorman knows me... but still. It happens pretty regularly.

I'm not arguing that. I love the E55 that I still have as well, but your talking about a bell hop/valet employees. It's like this, people can be impressed by things they know nothing about or have an idea of relevant costs, that's a universal thing. But being in "the know" so to speak of these type cars there status is near nothing. Especially of the people that actually purchased the e55s originally new or any vehicles since. In the world of domestics the e55 inpresses many people still sure. In the land of Europeans AMGs, Porsche, M's, newer S Audis. The e55 isnt in that league.
That is stupid beyond comprehension. Why on Earth would a 4000+ pound car have a manual? Why would they make it slower and less comfortable for long drives and daily commuting? It's not even fun. A manual is nice in a 911 GT3 or a BMW Z4 but in an E55? Its just not right, it's not the car's personality or the engine's personality.
Less me guess, you "want to feel connected to he driving experience and feel like you're the one who's controlling the car and feel everything that's happening blah blah blah". Who made up that cliche hahaha it's so stupid. I personally don't like driving cars with electric fuel pumps, I want a mechanical one that I wind while I'm driving because "I wanna feel like I'm putting in the effort". God this cliche pisses me off!!!

BMW M5 V10????? 6 speed manual and I don't think many owners are complaining.

The 6 speed manual M5 V10s was plain, no wonder they're rare. The 7 spd was a great match for that V10 and part of why it was so fast from a roll. I don't care how fast you shift, you will never shift as fast as a sequential. It also gave the car its character. There is some called CHARACTER, every good car has its own and somethings that are good in one car are horrible in another. The E55 is perfect with that long geared 5 spd, it suits the car and the engine perfectly. Imagine it had a super quick dual clutch, sure it would be faster but then the character would change. The 55s are known for that lazy low end torque PUUUUUULLLL, long gears and just PULL like a freight train. Also that DROP in RPMs when changing gears, that beautiful automatic uninterrupted rev drop, so heavy and brutal. Feels like a plane more than a car.
I know this movie doesn't have the best plot but I always remember this race because it just shows the CHARACTER of the SLR, which the 55s ultimately share alot with. Just look how brutal it is, so blunt, like a sledgehammer. Thank God you were never in charge of any AMG development. No manual in AMG, ever, period, deal with it. AMGs are brutal pigs, just an unstoppable tsunami roaring down the road, NO MANUAL ALLOWED. Why don't you go buy a japanese ricer and feel in touch with it.
