Oil Leak/Consumption
Hi all,
Last month while I was driving a message showed up " Add XX litre when next refueling " at that time I checked oil level it was 1 or 1.5 litre low. My mechanic told me that it's fine because these engines consume oil and my oil haven't been changed for a while.
At that time I've changed the oil, now after 2500 km driven, I've checked the oil level it says add 1.5 litre !
I've changed the oil sensor couple of month ago and it is working fine. There is no sign of leaks and I guess it's not normal that it consumes 1.5 litre every 2500km/1553 miles.

However since he couldn't find any thing leaking significantly, he said we could change the valve cover gaskets and oil filler neck since they show tiny signs of leaking/grease.
I don't won't be throwing parts on it ... I've been reading on forum most of all mentioned gasket, oil filler neck or the oil drain plug ...

isnt 1.5 qrts like 1.2litres? so nearly the same. This kind of consumpion of oil would be noticable if it was a leak. It would be wet. Do you have blue smoke on cold starts?

I think 1.5 litre equals 1.58 qrts.

My car has seepage from the valve cover gaskets. I use 1/2 a qrt every 3k miles. If you let the car idle up to temp and are in the garage with your hood open do you see or smell oil burning. I can see smoke even with a small leak after its hot. If you pull the air cleaner boxes you should be able to get a good look at the oil that is present around the gaskets. Also check for oil spots every time you leave the car parked

Do you see oily residue on your lower part of back bumper? Tips really black?

I share the 55k motor even though i have a different body style. I have heard about mechanics in the past saying this type of oil use is normal. My SL55 has 95,000 miles (152887 KM) on it and with significant mods, i never need to add oil between oil changes.

I have a weeping rear-main seal & slightly leaking VCG's (planning on doing them this weekend) and I've never gotten an oil light between changes.
Did you check around the oil cooler seal?
On way or another, if you're not seeing anything on your lower engine-bay panels, and you're not seeing significant leakage out of your valve cover gaskets...
To be missing over a quart of oil with no obvious justification would certainly worry me!

Temporary until I find where it is leaking from , I've added the 1.5 litre, now engine oil is ok.
Was thinking if the leaking is consistent then the mechanic simply didn't check everything ?!
He used to till me to stop using 0w40 because it's too thin oil and the weather he is really hot in summer ...
I've bought valve cover gaskets and glue/silicon. I'll look for other parts that shows signs of leak to change them all together.

whos to say the oil level was set to the max on the last oil change? perhaps the last oil change was say almost 1 liter low and then you drove 2500km and now it says 1.5 low which would mean it used less that 1 liter in 2500km which is ok. now that youve added 1.5 see how long it takes to get that message again.

This oil consumption sounds semi normal to me. After all it is a MB f/i motor. Even the n/a motors suck oil like crazy. If rear main, valve covers, oil filler neck show no signs of leak i would presume that its due to driving. But thats my assumption.
