Arnott--New vs. Reman.

My front passenger strut blew as I was looking at the car in front of my house. I see that Arnott has two versions--New and Reman. Anyone have any insight on these? I need to purchase within the next couple of days and I wanted to see if anyone had an opinion on the new version of the struts and are they worth the money instead of purchasing the reman units.

Thanks,
Sean

you will need to replace both drivers/passenger if going new/reman. your old strut will not perform as well as the new one, i read that the arnotts have different valving, etc

Thanks for the reply. I was going to replace both units at one time. Are the new units stiffer compared to the reman units? I do not want the front to feel stiff and the rear to feel soft.

ive been dealing with my own airmatic issues so been reading alot of threads.

read somewhere that the arnotts actually feel smoother in comfort mode, a new set of struts will probably make a big difference.

http://www.rebuildmastertech.com is another place you can try. they are $375 ea on ebay + $75 core, or send your struts in for rebuild.

My brother replace his passenger front with a new Arnott on a w220 S500. The Arnott is noticeably smoother but not to the point that you're going to feel like somethings wrong with the car if you only do one. It's definitely a smoother ride but it's not a night and day difference.

I just replaced my fathers passenger front with a reman arnott. I'll test drive it today and see if the ride is different. He said it drove just like before but I haven't driven it yet.

I've used both on customers cars depending on their preferences. Both work like new, if it were my personal car I would use the reman just to save the money. They preform the same.

I currently have a new Mercedes replacement on the front right and an old one on the left. Car shimmy's a little. I'm certain from miss matched shocks. (Very old and very new) i will be replacing the drivers side as soon as I feel up to it. i will verify if it got rid of the Shimmy over bumps when that time comes.

i was looking for the difference between an Arnott reman and Arnott new front air strut but can not find an answer even in this thread - anyone know the difference ? i thought i read the OEM style has better dampening/valving characteristics and the Arnott new version is limited somehow but can not find that thread now ??

I can't recommend Mastertech it was a less than satisfactory experience for me. Going with the OEM shocks one at a time worked out well for me.

this MIGHT be the freakiest thing ever.
yesterday i was in my garage working on my other car (clk55). Beside it was my e55. The e55 had not been touched/driven at all yesterday. While working on my clk55 i hear a pop followed by hiss. I look over and the front passenger side of my e55 was lowering. Long story short, the front passenger strut failed internally as i was present beside the car.

Amazing coincidence!

Ordered two new Arnotts from FCP. About $260 more than reman but no core needed for new and i can sell my old struts to Arnott for $100 with free shipping.

One question: is there a need to do anything to the cars software via STAR after I replace both front struts?

It would not hurt to confirm calibration of the suspension. After replacing all suspension components I had to raise the rear of the car and raise the right front of the car to bring the axles and control arms' angle into the specified range. Not difficult to do; I've posted on this in the STAR DIY section.

I currently have arnotts. My rear bags are red actually so I think I might have the e500 version and not the amg ones.... they were on the car when I got it last April in 2017. I'm considering going with the mastertechs if and when the notts crap out... good idea???

I think Arnott changed the color at some point possibly for an "updated" version but I have red amg bags sitting in my garage -- still on originals

MSRP for Arnott designed new front struts for the E55 are $675 (plus you can get $50 each back when you return our used cores). The remanufactured O.E. struts are $541.27 plus a $100 Core Deposit (as of 5/18). Remans maintain the vehicles auto damping functionality but have an unknown number of miles while the Arnott designed new struts include brand new shocks which were custom valved to provide an O.E. like ride. Most drivers like the all new struts but purists may want the M-B damping (unfortunately the remans are in tight supply).

Check out this new video to find out exactly what Arnott does during the remanufacturing process (mostly shows W220 S-Class strut being remanufactured). Our remans may cost a bit more - but ask other reman vendors if they spend as much time, effort and expense rebuilding their struts (spin blast, replace the oil and worn shock parts, use new tier one components including a ContiTech air sleeve, etc.)

Thanks. All went well. No Star needed for my R&R of my fronts with new (not reman) Arnotts. Arnotts appear to be of very good quality. Have put about 400 miles on them so far, initially stiffer than my old ones (expected, since old were 12 year old originals with 94k) but settled in fine. Only issue: the clip on the back of the electrical connector on the Arnotts is a design that doesnt clip directly into the clip on the E55. In other words, Arnott used wrong design on back of the connector and as such, it doesnt clip onto the clip housing on the car. Zip tie fixes that, though.
