2002 MB E55 AMG
Paint difference - AMG vs. MB std.

2002 W210 E55

Does anyone know if the E AMG models in 2002 were finished any differently than the standard E series? I've seen E320/430 02's in the same color that didn't look as good as the AMG. More clear coat?

TIA

TJC

I don’t know if the nano paint makes a big difference, but my 3-year old CLK looked shinier with my detailing than the new E that I was picking up.

AMG
More info on nano paint here...

https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...ght=nano+paint

Doesn't look like many of the W210s got the nano paint.

I believe my car has the cerami-clear coat and I noticed a lot of orange peel...

Not very good...

2002 MB E55 AMG
Let's be clear ... I'm talking about 2002 - W210, not W211. The question is, were there any differences in paint finish between AMG models and W210 MBz models? Like more coats of clear coat, etc. I see a difference, wondered if it's my imagination.

This is well before nano- whatever.

TJC...

Ooops...I had a 2001 for a bit. Looked the same as my aunty's '97 E320 paint wise. Didn't look better or worse. Same color...

Actually, it's quite bad in consideration to other cars I've looked at. Even my SL with cerami-clear isn't as bad. Maybe it's the black...??? But it's that uneven look of reflections...sort of like orange skin, hence the term Orange Peel.

For example this picture of my car...

You can see it from the reflections...

It's your imagination. The paint/clear is the same.

Onesixeight: if you're referring to the wavy, non-flat, non-mirrorlike appearance of the paint, that's an MB paint characteristic.

Compare to almost any other marque and you won't see the waviness. But all MB's have that, some models more noticeable than others.
When I first started looking at MB's a few years back I commented on that to a dealer, who explained in some BS-sounding jargon why MB paint is that way.

If that's what you're referring to it's not considered abnormal or undesirable by MB (though I still don't think it looks as good as completely flat finish).

One of the reasons MB paint has more orange peel than others brands is the percentage of solids in their paint. The EPA put restrictions on the paint solids creating a less even delivery of paint.

Most would consider this a shoddy paint job and NOT what a $80K+ car should come with...

As far as paint characteristic...if it is so, Benz should do something to improve their paint delivery process...because if Japanese and American car manufactures can avoid this...Why can't MB?

My Porsche 996 TT & BMW 745Li has much better paint with less orange peel...

The AMG has speed paint. One of the tradeoffs for excess speed is losing some of the shine.

What's "speed paint"?
Can you elaborate?

The paint is the same, it is actually the application process that is different. They use one thick layer instead of 3-4 thin layers, which means you save about 30kg in weight for the speed-paint.

Actually, you know I was only joking right? There is no difference in paint.
