Arrow OEM 74mm Throttle Body + Carbon Fiber Intake vs. Upgrading to 80mm / 82mm TB

I currently have an OEM 74mm throttle body with the carbon fiber intake system.

With the intake system I have, is it possible to modify the throttle body section to fit a 80mm or 82mm throttle body?

I haven't touched my intake for a while. But from what I remember, the intake to the throttle body was really snug.

Ideas? Suggestions? Solutions?

If worse comes to worst, my intake system will be seen in the classified section relatively soon.

Who's carbon fiber intake are you using? I know you can open up the Carbonio intake enough to slide over an 82mm throttlebody easily enough (that is what I have on my SL55). I used a 2" (x1" tall) sanding drum (medium grit) on a die grinder.

I have the "original" prototype from CK Carbon Imports. The person / people that created it used my car as their template. At the time, I didn't own the car yet. But yeah... it's pretty snug at the throttle body.

Do you have pics of your fitment and/or what you did to make it fit?

All you have to do is dremel the inside to make it fit to the 82mm.
Since you dont have a carbonio one not sure how much material you have to take off.

There's a bit of an issue...
If I attempt to dremel the part that goes around the throttle body neck, it will no longer exist.
Keep in mind that the part that has to be dremeled is very thin (with a thin rubber inner ring holding it in place).
Meaning that, it currently only supports a 74mm.

Here are some pics to further explain...
This is the actual piece I have on my car.

The piece that the arrow is pointing at securely goes over the neck of the throttle body. Similar concept to the picture below...

So in other words... if that piece is completely gone, is there a way to connect the two?
It's going to end up looking something like this...

Maybe I'm just over-thinking the situation.
But I believe I'm thinking it out correctly.

Perhaps there's someone on here with the exact same carbon fiber intake airbox with an upgraded throttle body.

What is the OD of your air box where it meets the TB? What is the ID?

my carboniio air box was 86mm (ID at the TB) when I got it (sized for 74mm plus rubber sleeve I assume) and I opened it up to 90mm and it fits nicely on the 82mm TB

I was left with a wall thickness of 3.5mm which seems fine.

The carbonio came with an aluminm/foam piece that seals it up fine and allows for "sleeveless" install.

hope that helps,
Chris

LoL.
If it comes down to it, you'll get first rights to my air box.
However, I can't promise "cheap" though.

Thanks for the info Chris.
I haven't measured it "yet". But I will this weekend.

Hypothetically speaking... let's say I am able to enlarge the inner diameter to 80mm / 82mm. It wouldn't be a good idea if there wasn't a sleeve of some sort between the throttle body neck and the air box connecting piece, right? I'd think that it would damage the carbon fiber, right?

If you have enough meat there (anything larger than 97 OD should be fine, anything less may be an issue) to enlarge it to 90mm (which is the size you need order to slip it over the OD of the 82mm TB) THEN, it would fit on as I described mine does "SLEEVE-LESS". Using a seal similar to the one that I showed that carbonio supplies (they supply it for an 80mm TB, so I had to open that up a bit as well), you would be sliding the carbon fiber directly over the TB which I have not found to be a problem .

look at my previous recommendations for the sanding drum ... any smaller and you may weaken the part UN-necessarily.

Results are in...
Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like I can even fit an 80mm throttle body. Meaning that if I remove the rubber sleeve, the overall inner-diameter still won't be able to fit the outer-diameter of an 80mm throttle body.

Now I'm inclined to sell it.

no MBs at the moment :(
That Aeroblade looks really good.

Does anyone know who makes the OEM system? Often it's just a rebranded version of another popular manufacturer.

Also, if you just want rare, emergency storage, I highly recommend the Weathertech RackSack (http://www.weathertech.com/racksack/)

I like using it for emergencies or trips where I only need storage in one direction. It folds up into a nice small bundle I can keep inside the car. You'll still need to by cross bars to use them.

Do you have headers yet? Big crank pulley? You may get much better results investing elsewhere.

Yup. Got those.
However... they're still in their original packaging (unopened boxes).
Got hit with some unexpected financial situations that takes priority over power modding (...unfortunately).

I came across a really good deal and didn't really want to pass it up, but I couldn't give the seller and answer cause I wasn't sure if it was going to work with my current setup. If I had to spend more money on a new or different air box, then conceptually, I'm not really getting a deal.
