Smoke out of exhaust

So new problem and this one scares me a lot, was driving normally when an e92 m3 pulls up so of course we do a little pull and after that I noticed my car smoking a lot while driving and when I turn off to pull over it just stopped smoking, no cel no misfires so I'm lost, tried looking it up but most complaints were on startup but mine did this while driving, does anyone know how screwed I am?

Well shouldnt you figure that out first....what color is it? Blue out the tail pipe....yes you are screwed. white out the tail pipe....yes you are screwed. Leaking valve cover onto manifold smoking....no not screwed and easy fix. The last one you will smell burning pretty good too.

Check your oil for level and color, check your coolant, check the garage floor for leaks. If everything checks out see if you can reproduce the symptom and see color, etc.

I friend of mine owns a shop so I'm bringing in the car for him to look at today so we can do head gasket test

Had it been a while since you punched it? Could it maybe have just been clearing out any carbon in the engine or did the smoke persist?

The car sat for a month while I was putting in a 3k stall and I didn't beat on it after I put it in for about 5 days and then I did a wot pull for the first time in a little bit, also I shouldn't have done this but I started the car, after it was already up to temp, and that's when I went wot almost immediately after car was restarted

After some exhaust work my buddy and I went to Cars and Coffee. It had been about 3 days since the exhaust work was done. He was behind me and the first time I stepped on it he told me that a ton of carbon build up came out of the exhaust.

It has yet to happen again but he said it was pretty noticeable. The "smoke" did not persist.

I'm no mechanic so I don't want to tell you not to worry about it but if it's not smoking at idle or on a cold start it doesn't sound like a leak.

My whole exhaust was dropped to do the tranny service so maybe that has something to do with it but I took it to my mechanic and we went for a drive and beat on it a little and he said it's not overheating and it's not leaving puffs of smoke or anything like that so he said nothing to worry about but was wondering if I should do compression test just in case, he told me it would almost be impossible for it to be my head gasket with only 72k and basically stock car

Yeah if you've got the ability to do a compression test go for it. No harm no foul.

I saw no signs of head gasket issue, coolant level good, caps are crystal clear no residue built up at all and I had my mechanic check it out and he said it might have just been a hiccup but I'm not convinced

Get her checked out and make sure she is in good health. My E55 would blow a little black smoke (decatted long tubes) if I let it sit for a few days or would drive it slowly for a week or two. The first time it let carbon out the pipes and I couldn't get a good eye on it she went into the shop for a once over.

About 5 years ago, and about 4 months into owning my new-to-me 1985 300D benz (a diesel), I was tooling north on I-15 at around 75-80mph. For about 3 seconds, the tone of the engine changed - it got louder and had a rattle in time with the rpm's. At the same time, copious amounts of grey smoke were coming from the tailpipe. My heart sank, but the 3 liter 5 banger kept going as if nothing was amiss. Haven't heard the sound since. I'm convinced a chunk of carbon came loose from one of the cylinders (a glow plug tip buildup, maybe?) and got hammered away by an exhaust valve seat until it got spit out. The stuck-for-3-seconds exhaust valve dumped a bunch of unburned fuel into the tailpipe.

My definition of "hiccup". YMMV.

So... did you notice if the sound of the engine changed during the smoke?

Found out the cause of the smoke, was not coming from tail pipes, atf fluid leaked onto exhaust causing all the smoke
