Whine noise sounds like pwr str pump
Hi all,
Dead keen on joining the club, went to look at a 2004 AMG E55 today. Car has about 110000km or 65k miles thereabouts. Everything looked good on the car it has the full service history and had been serviced more frequently than 25000km stated interval which seems like ages. One thing that stopped me from putting a deposit on the car there and then; it sounded like the power steering pump was gone on it or so I thought. Same sound as a problematic power steering pump but the sound did not change tone when the steering wheel is turned. I couldn't figure it, wasn't coming from the supercharger which I thought may have been the case or any of the idlers. The mechanics who were checking over it for me seemed to think it was just noisy operation of the drive belt because its heavy duty and has to drive the supercharger. Dunno if this is an accurate diagnosis although I hope it is as then I will definitely put the deposit down tomorrow. Just wanted to research a little more before spending my hard earned.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

So here is the list of possibilities from least to most expensive
Idler belt pulley
P.s. Reservoir causing aeration of the fluid
Supercharger bearing,
Air injection pump ( only for 2 min when cold)
P.s. pump itself.
A/C compressor
Transmission front pump .
So a good technician should have no problem isolating the issue.
Good luck !

I'm guessing it's the oil pump after reading the thread supplied.
it was definitely there the whole time and not the air pump.
Will have to ask the mechanic to check if the noise goes away once rpm above 2000 which most people have claimed theirs does.
If it's the trans front pump I'm guessing it will also increase with rpm but be there the whole time. Where bouts does this noise come from exactly? If that's the case what are they worth to replace?
I found this vid on YouTube it sounds exactly like this-

wow, that should be pretty easy to find... I would start with removing the belt and running it that way to see if it goes away..
