HELP! - K&N Air Filter Replacement
I have purchased two K&N filters, and need help putting them in. I took the "AMG engine cover off, and it seems like a special tool to get the air filter cover off.
What do I need? Also, have read threads about oil being thrown off the new filter, screwing up the MAF> Anyone got a trick for dealing with that pre-installation?

What you need is a set of "torx" drivers. That head looks like a cross between a phillips head and an allen type screw. If you go to any auto parts store you can get an assorted set that has this particular one in it. It has been a while since I swapped the filters in my E55 so I cannot remember the exact "T" size. It was in the smaller range around T-20...just a guess. From what I have read here the new E55 doesn't have an MAF sensor so oil from these filters is not an issue. With the 2002 and before E55's the oil from these performance filters was know to cause damage to the MAF sensors.

Assuming you have a W210 it's not an engine cover, it's an airbox. And yes, you need a torx driver. I've had the K & N's for 18 mos (maybe 11,000 miles) without incident (unless you consider more HP an 'incident'
). Upon cleaning and re-oiling, it's best to go lightly and set it aside for awhile because of the MAF sensitivity (from what I hear).
I'd bet that a pass by a hair dryer would blow off any loose oil.

Dr. Chill,
Unless your engine bay looks different than my '04 E55, the torx drivers are necessary to take off the air filter housing covers. I assume that the '03 and '04 cars are the same. Not sure about the N/A E55 cars 2002 and prior.
