Attn: T-Bone!

Hey T-Bone,

Loved your Sat. Radio install! I'm taking my car in Thurs to have my radio installed. Do you have any picts of your mounting bracket underneath your rear window deck?

It would be a big help to my tech guy...

Any help you could give me would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Tony

I see you have an E-55 with Renntach upgrade? What Renntech mods did you do and how noticeable were the upgrades in performance. I'm in West Palm and looking to go with Renntech. Thanks for your input.

Here's a thread that I responded to a while ago regarding my Renntech upgrade.

Other people chimed in too.

I also got the Renntech steering wheel:

and the Renntech rear spoiler:

here are the pics

Ok... so here are the pictures of the antenna.

Here is the antenna. It is on the left side. If you take a look underneath the rear deck you will see where it went. You can see the wire that leads to it. This wire had to be rerouted from the trunk lid back into the trunk itself.

Here are two more from different angles.

A hole had to be drilled into the metal to mount the antenna. I have black felt tape that covers the wires, but I removed it for the photos. The wires are zipped tied together.

As you can tell it's a HUGE *** antenna. I could never mount this on my trunk. It would just be an eye sore to me. I'm not sure how people will get used to it being on the trunk lid. I'm glad I don't have to.

Reception is great. An amazing selection of stations.

Reception is only lost when something blocks the antenna from the sky. As long as the antenna has a direct line of sight to the sky, then there are no problems. Like I mentioned before it has a buffer of a few seconds to allow you to travel under bridges and large trees without the signal being lost.

T-Bone...

Had my Sirius radio installed today, per your installation method...works great!

My dealer was so impressed with your method, he said that all future E class installs will be done that way. (he hated the idea of drilling into the trunk lid too)

Thanks T-Bone!

Radio was $675
Labor was $250 (I'm pretty sure I got hosed) 5 billable hours

Too much for a radio they'll be giving away in two years!

P.S. Love the new wheels BTW!

t-bones installation

Hopefully within the next few days I will be installing Sirius radio the "t-bone way". I went to my dealer with the pics and he said he should be able to do it. I also called t-bones installer today and he was more than happy to help. I'm not sure how much my dealer will be responsible for if it doesn't work as designed. They are giving me some crap about the warrenty being voided because It's not in the "recommended Mercedes spot", but I'll have to see what happens. I'ts costing me 1000.00 which seems to be the going rate here in NJ. Anyone else have this done this way yet and if so, are you happy with the results. thanks.

the t-bone way

Glad you got a kick out of that one. Just curious, on a scale of one to ten, where do you rank your reception with 10 being excellent. Do you have much interference or lack of signal? thanks

installation

Monday is almost upon us and I'm still trying to find out specifics about how good reception is using the "t-bone" way. I will be getting this done very soon and would really appreciate a response from t-bone or roadrunner. thanks again

I find no problems with reception except when I go under bridges or large trees. Sometimes it won't even cut out at all when going under bridges. However, going under bridges repeatedly will use up the buffer so switching stations rebuilds the buffer.

If it does cut out, it will cut out for maybe one or two seconds then come back. It doesn't bother me that much.

The reception is either yes or no. There is no in between like FM or AM radio with static.

I also have no frame of reference to compare my reception to though. All I can say is that I am very happy with it and that there are is an amazing amount of stations.

There are even some comedy stations.

The "t-bone way" is the only installation way to go.

I also find that when I drive through a cluster of large trees, or am in my garage, that the signal cuts out. Other than that there have been no issues with reception.

Voice Recognition Comands

Does anybody know if there are voice commands that the Satellite radio will understand? On regular radio (AM or FM) you can switch stations by voice. When I pull the voice stick on the side of the column, I get a picture of a microphone and a phrase something like "Application?" is displayed.

Just picked up my car from the dealership today. The T-Bone way works great. The sound is AWESOME with the LOGIC 7 system!

Thanks T-Bone and Ex-Beemer for your help.

Parts were $692.30 and the labor was another $400. Dealership told me that they will start installing all E series this way. They had done a SL55 the other day and drilled holes into it...OUCH!

Maybe on the SL since the roof retracts, drilling is the only way.

Spero

Thumbs up the t-bone way

Finally got my install the t-bone way and so far so good. I'm absolutely thrilled! My dealer did however emphasize that this was a one time thing and would not do it for anyone else. Supposedly they had to beg the manager to do this for me. Anyway, I'm glad to have found this site and cannot thank you enough. It sounds great too! Now all I have to do is figure out how to use it. ha ha, thanks,
Lou

Could someone please post copies of the pictures of this install. For some reason I can not get at the ones T-Bone posted here in this string.

Thx--George Des

DANG! This thread is old.

Those pictures were on a server that I no longer have access to.

I'll have to see if I can find them, but I think they are gone.

I'll try and get some photos the next time I'm back in Cali which will be in about 2 weeks.
