VRP Secondary Heat Exchanger

I just mounted it not hooked it just wanted to see how it looks like. Do i hook up the hose that comes off the top of the original heat exchanger to the passenger side secondary and from the drivers side secondary back to the supercharger?

Really interested on the secondary heat exchanger but my CLS 55 has distronic park sensors in front will this heat exchanger not fit? Thanks!

You will be able to fit the secondary by simply moving the distronic box forward an inch.

Park sensor are not in the way.

Thank you.

Hello, thank you. Will the bracket and distronic sensor both have to move forward 1" or just the sensor itself and the bracket stays put on a CLS55? Looks like on the E55 they had to ditch the whole bracket.

Thanks!

Hello, will this 90deg mount have to be taken out for the secondary heat exchanger to fit? This is on a 06 CLS55. Thanks!

you’ve probably seen this video but just in case. Not sure if CLS55 bracket is same with E.
Good luck and let us know.

The secondary ehat exchanger has a built in mount for the e55 hood latch.

here is a photo of the secondary installed on a CLS55

Even easier, if that is your car in the picture you do not have distronic. The sensor would be in the middle of that bracket. No changes needed.

Hello yes, that is my car. Awesome glad the heat exchanger will fit right behind that bracket then. I am wrangling over to go with Gates green or yellow stripe heater hose or silicone heater hose. Silicone is nice but more vulnerable for chaffing.

Thanks!

E55 and several 928s
Wonder if that is small enough for the space where the air pump for the shocks normally is. My plan is to put some heat rejection mass there.

Update: I finished my install of the secondary heat exchanger and to be honest with the extra money I spent on Aeroquip lines and fittings ( my choice vs brass fittings for better flow)

and with all the messing around of this install I should have gone with an upgraded main heat exchanger and not the secondary. I have to measure the IAT yet but I also updated the aux pump to a Bosch 010. Very tight fit to the distronic bracket on the left side. I could barely get 1/6" pinchwelt there to protect the exchanger from chaffing on the bracket.

IAT"s

So I hooked up my carsoft Mercedes-Benz scanner and watched actual values on the Compressor test setting and right about 40% engine load the supercharger clutch would engage and the ECM would turn on the auxiliary water pump for the intercooler circuit (running a Bosch 010). The IAT would start to climb steady as I drove on highway 70mph and the supercharger stayed locked up the IAT would settle in at ~155F with 12-20% engine load. If I slowed down enough to disengage the supercharger the auxiliary pump would stay on and once I got back up to 70mph with no supercharger the IAT dropped to 134F.

Now I think these are to high but please tell me if I am wrong. I was questioning myself the whole day did I hook up the water lines correctly... Had to otherwise it would not have bleed properly. The secondary cooler is cool too the touch which is throwing my for a loop because I have the hot side of the intercooler feeding to the secondary exchanger first

that flows into the stock heat exchanger then to the Bosch 010 pump. The system is not split.

I am debating whether the relay in the rear SAM is good or not. The fuse is not blown.

Your thoughts please. Thanks in advance!

That does seem a high...that's higher than the IAT's I see during a full throttle pull at 14psi of boost.

I have only the primary VRP heat exchanger, and Superflo pump, and during normal cruising my IAT's are about 15-18 degrees above ambient temperature. For example, at 85 degrees ambient, my IAT's are about 100-103 degrees.

When I do a full throttle run, IAT's go to about 45-50 degrees over ambient...so with 85 degree ambient, IAT's will hit in the 130's.

Thank you for the reply, this morning I kept the throttle light and no supercharger engagement just seeing what IAT would do and cruising at 70-75mph and ambient air temp at 73F the IAT was at 98.6F. This from dead cold to cruising on highway with no supercharger engagement and intercooler pump had been off too.

So I figure that the coolant in the heat exchangers should be nice and cool so let's crack the throttle just enough to get over 40% load and engage supercharger and turn the intercooler pump on and the cool fluid should circulate and bring IAT down or at least stay steady.
Nope!!! Climb climb. Just went up to around 146F with supercharger locked up and pump on but engine load under 30%.

I am ordering a new relay for intercooler pump. I know the pump works because I was jumping the pins at the pump with 12V leads from AUX battery to bleed the system.

There is no way the pump is running even though ECUaECU is commanding it to. The posts I have read on split cooling makes marginal difference so I don't think it's that since my system is not split. Factory supercharger pulley too and a RaceIQ stage 1 ECU tune.

Yea something is not right.. From a cold start to cruising the temp should not be that high and stay that high

instead of getting a relay you may consider wiring the pump to run off a different circuit i used a fuse piggyback to jump onto the same circuit as my 12v front cig lighter so it turns on with key position 2.

I will try a different circuit of the relay does not work....no reason that temps are climbing up and staying up. My strong suspicion is the pump is not working at least I hope it is not. There is no way that secondary heat exchanger which is my first in line for the cooling system would be cool to the touch if it had 150F coolant running through it. Thanks for the tip on cigarette lighter circuit. What Amp rating is that circuit rated for?

Using one of the fuse piggy back units means that it only piggy backs off the fuse and your gauge of wiring from there will dictate the circuit. I think its a 10-15amp fuse for the cig lighter then you can use a 10amp fuse for the new circuit. I found the cig lighter would blow first so I could tell if the pump circuit would be blown when my phone charger light wasnt on lol. I think the youtube guy talks you through the circuit piggy back on his superflo pump diy video but i havent watched it.

I replaced the relay in slot A in rear SAM and still no change. Ambient air this morning was 62F and with supercharger locked up but only running 22% engine load at highway speeds the IAT was 138.6F

Pump must not be running still. Next check will be at the plug at the pump to check for power and ground. If a no go there and then will check for power and ground at rear SAM for relay A. Might just end up doing piggy back fuse. Thanks!
