So I had a local shop put in new motor and transmission mounts today. Had some weird observation and wanted to see if it was normal.
At idle, I feel MORE vibration than before. And I'm sure my old mounts were toast.
While driving, everything feels much smoother.
Do new mounts have a break-in period? If this normal?
Thanks,
Cyrus
I've had 8 MB cars and each has had the motor and trans mounts changed at least once. The symptom is always rough idle. And after the replacement, the rough idle is always gone. Immediately.
Just did mine this weekend. I do not have a rough idle. They need to check them. Maybe they did not align the mounts properly? There is a small tab located on top of the engine mount that needs to be aligned with a small notch were the engine mount bolts the engine mount bracket. Sounds like something is not right.

I agree, I did my own not long ago and my cabin vibrations instantly went away. They might not have aligned the tabs correctly, I would call and ask that they check on that. If everything was done right you should have no idle vibrations.

Agree with others who stated vibration at idle is instantly gone. Suspect a problem with parts and/or installation. Did the shop use quality OEM parts? Here is my post on this topic in another thread with a photo showing the tab.
I bought the parts myself - Corteco mounts (the OEM supplier). I don't see how the mounts could be installed with the tab in any other orientation, but I could have them check - would that be a difficult think to have them check? My other concern is that maybe one of the vacuum hoses came undone when the engine was hoisted, but I haven't given that a good look yet.
So I'm getting mixed answers here... some people say a break-in period with some vibration is normal, others say it's not.
I tried to get a good look at my mounts to make sure they're installed correctly (the small metal tab aligned), but damn, it's hard. I can't see the top of the mount no matter what I do.
Anyone with an E63 with Corteco (or even new MB) mounts, could you do me a favor? Take a look at this passenger's side mount and let me know if the small imprinted numbers on the white plastic rubber dust shield looks the same.
I’m mainly posting to piggyback a bit, since I recently (a couple months ago) replaced my motor and trans mounts, and I’ve gotten similar issues. The difference is at idle I get no vibrations, but if I go WOT I get a TON coming through the floor and pedals after around 2.5-3k RPM. I made a thread about it with 0 responses, so I don’t know if this is normal.

Have you examined your flex disk / giubo? I had similar symptoms in a BMW and that's what it was.
No headers, just on the stock manifolds. I did have to replace the driver manifold since it broke at the collector (due to the worn out motor mounts). I bought the car in March, and had a PPI done before buying it, and the flex disk didn’t come up as needing to be replaced. I do have 1 on hand if it’s needed (these cars need two right?).
So I ended up getting a bore camera to check things out. As you can see from the images, all the mounts look properly installed.
I then checked the oil, and noted it was about 2 quarts too high. Thanks MB dealership. So I got that back to normal, but still have a little vibration at idle coming through the chassis. The idle speed is stable, no CELs. Any ideas?
be careful...the updated dipstick part number reads 2 quarts too high for oil. i still fill up to the amount i have always prior to installation of the updated dipstick
@gtr886, draining of just the pan 8.5 quarts should be close, If you also drain the front oil cooler, 9.5 quarts is okay. Always start engine after oil change to ensure no leakage then recheck using the dip stick after sitting for a while.
Good Luck
Mobil 0-40w synthetic only and use the OEM filter.
A small over fill showing on the stick is fairly normal as the filter drains down after shutting the car off.
Also, replace the copper washers on both plugs,, easy on tightening the oil cooler plug as it is thin on the threads.
That's not normal, there is no break in period. It should be just like when it was new. Ours was so smooth the wife said she felt the car was quicker and quieter after having the motor mounts & transmission mount replaced.
