Hi
2004 e55, 77k miles.
On the way home my car through the p0456 code, which I just read here is the dreaded gas tank code. Poop.
I ran across the 15 year limit, which would mean mine is once again, out of warranty. (2/2004 in service date)
So i went out to my car, pulled the rear seat, and found NO smell, no leak, completely dry I then checked the gas cap, its tight with a good o-ring.
So two questions. what in the evap system is the next most likely failure to check?
And two, can anyone school me on the gas tank issue?
I guess i dont understand why the hole tank needs to be replaced for a leaking sender?
why cant the sender just be replaced?
Any updates to the campaign? is it still only 15 years? I spent like 30 min weeding through that huge thread.
I attached pictures on my VMI from 2015 and the under the seat shots
Eh. p0456 can occur from something as simple as the car running its vacuum test of the tank, and you fill it up. I get this on occasion when the car hits about a 1/2 tank. Can also occur from a fault gas cap.

May depend on the dealer if it gets changed beyond 15yrs. As has been discussed taking out the entire fuel tank is excessive. If you’re sender has never been changed your on borrowed time and may be putting undue stress on your pumps. Has your purge valve and damper cage been updated? Other wise could be the pressure sensor on the sender. Also search the code, could be a loose hose from the evap sys. https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/...0455-woes.html

Never changed the cage or damper, I'll look into that
Thanks
I've had this code on the w209 (turned out to be the sensor on a after market sender unit). On the w211 it was first the evap hose to metal tube along the drivers fender going to the purge valve. It was disconnected due to blown motor mount. Then it came back again and I changed the damper cage to the upgraded unit 211-470-01-16 and the purge valve 000-470-88-93. It's been gone for over a year Still working on the W164
Make sure you do both purge valve and damper cage

Could you help with the photos of purge valve and damper cage location?
I was getting an annoying amount of p0456, every few days I'd have to drag out the obd reader and clear it. Then one fine day I noticed that the crankcase hose was disconnected from the intake there ahead of the TB. Since that item has nothing at all to do with the evap system, i had zero expectation that this would have any effect on p0456. Well, here it is several months later and no repeat of that issue.
