Missed fuel pump warranty period and now quoted $2k to fix - what are my options

I feel used and abused and learned a lot about life overall after buying an 03 e55 without knowing how trash they are compared to 04-06!

basically now i need a passenger side fuel pump, but instead of just the $550 part i guess the bill is $2100 at an MB dealer because they updated the wiring and i need other stuff and everything else.

i tried to appeal to mbusa to cover it (warranty on pumps ended 15 months ago) but lost.

i dont have the breakdown of the $2k estimate but im wondering really what are my options? tomorrow im going to mb to try to get the 2k breakdown sheet.

it sounds like just the passenger side top part is leaking right/having trouble...but im told just that shouldnt be fixed it by itself/cant be....

i am willing to go aftermarket if possible. i see people installing aftermarket but im not sure where to being. do i need to find a custom race-shop basically to an aftermarket fuel pump in these cars?

any forum members on the east coast capable of this? willing to pay of course.

really need a e55 friend rn hahaha.

You weren't satisfied with the answers you got earlier and had to post a new thread? Barry (bbirdwell) and tw2 gave you some solid info to go off of and it seems like you just ignored it.

https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/...termarket.html

2003 models aren't trash, you were just an uninformed buyer that didn't know the issues with the car.

+1, 2003 models are great, they just need a new radiator. 2004 models won't be covered for fuel tank warranty very soon as well. You can buy all the parts for $1k and DIY. I suspect the $2k from the dealer is labor, I am not sure a new tank + labor to install it could fit in that quote...

Unfortunately you need to cough up and enjoy the car afterwards. It is worth it and yes there are other possible expensive maintenance and repair items that can come up too.

Double pumps (passenger) and filter unit (driver) need harness adapters, like 15 bucks each.

Get the pump and its adapter harness, do your filter down the road.

Careful! If the car has the 1st or 2nd generation fuel filter/regulator, those are not compatible with the 2nd generation fuel pump which is what the OP should be purchasing. On the pumps, the internal fuel line connectors changed from female to male. If the 00-00 pumps are installed, you must use the 3rd generation fuel filter/regulator. If the car already has the 00-00 pumps, it would already (or should have) the adapter harness already installed and then you could swap just the pumps as the proper filter/regulator would already be installed.

OP, like I mentioned, the parts will cost you ~$1000. Do it yourself in an hour or so and save $1000. Get a fuel tank locking ring removal tool for a few bucks off of Amazon or at your local auto parts store. Jumper the fuel pump relay in the trunk while you have a hose connected to the Schrader valve on the fuel rail to drain the fuel out of the tank (you want 2 bars maximum on the gauge). When you disconnect the fuel lines from the pump, tie a length of paracord around the ends; when you pull the filter/regulator out of the other side of the tank the paracord will come with it. Tie the paracord to the new fuel filter/regulator's fuel lines and use the other end of the paracord to pull the fuel lines back over the saddle hump. Everything on the fuel pump side is a tight fit but it's not difficult, just a few minutes of working everything into place.

Also, be advised that the relays for the non-AMG do NOT correspond to the relays for the AMG. Non-AMG fuel pump relay is in the rear SAM, the AMG fuel pump relay is located on the opposite side of the trunk under the panel. You have to remove the entire side panel as there is no access port. While you are doing the pumps, replace the relay whether it looks like it needs it or not. If you're reading the info I pointed out to you, you'll know all of this by now.

I don’t think I ever thought of my car as trash. Personally I opted for a low miles, extremely well taken care of 03 over one of the later years with a possible dodgy history. I still had to change the radiator and seal up a leaky fuel pump but I couldn’t be happier with the car. With a set of mbh headers and x-pipe on the way I’ll be looking for some nice gains in power too.

IN THE SHORT RUN
Those are first-generation fuel pumps. OP would have to locate and purchase a first or second-generation filter/regulator from "new old stock" to use them. The first gen filter/regulator is A 211-470-24-94 and the second gen filter/regulator is A 211-470-51-94. Personally I would go with the latest version if possible; there has to be a valid reason for the updates.

I'm with you Barry. Seems like the op is looking for the least expensive. He could do a paper filter change and leave the sender he has. Also doesn't look like he turns wrenches$$$$.

If a guy wanted, pumps and filter could be done on the cheap. Modify the current pump buckets and drop in 2 walbro's (or some other pump manufacturer) and do a paper filter change.
I think the reason for "upgrade" is the cracking plastic top leaking fuel.
