Here’s my take on this, the head bolts are over exaggerated. Yes there has been failure, but when you consider the thousands of M156 engine that we’re manufactured, your looking at maybe 1%.
The typical owners doesn’t need to change his\her head bolts. I like most have chosen to have mine done, after realizing after an extensive examination that I didn’t need to even touch them. As not only the head bolts but the bucket lifters were is excellent condition considering the year and mileage. My MB certified tech, said that he would have left them alone after examining them. I documented this in a thread last year. Knowing what I know now, I wouldn’t touch them unless I had an issue. Save your money, your engine will start displayIng issues long before a bomb goes off (low coolant, light exhaust smoke) etc.

All E63’s are welcome, as long as it has the M156 One Man, One Engine in it 😁

E63 Wagons are so rare that I’ve only seen two in person, and I’ve owned several AMG’s over the last 13 years. 🤔

Quick shot at the park this afternoon. Been wrenching on my G55 so much lately, def have some work to do on the E63 love driving this car... even when shes filthy af.

Future plans:
- Paint the hood / Bumper (rock chips)
- Color correct the paint (or just repaint the whole damn thing)
- New stock rims, these came w the car beat to hell
- New front suspension, driver's side sags
- Finally get sway bar installed
- New headlight lenses when in for paint
- All season tires for when we move to Seattle
- Drive it more

Don't mean to hijack the thread I started myself, but I got many subscribers thanks to this thread and thanks to people watching the videos from this thread. I am celebrating 100+ subscribers and organized a free giveaway. The prizes are a dash cam, car seat organizer and iPhone 11 charger case that will be give away randomly. Dropping the link here too in case anyone is interested.

A lot of guys here will probably flame me for this but I will say it anyway. If someone is shopping for an E63 C63 or any car with M156 engine for that matter, the money that need to be spend for head bolt replacement one by one method equal to what will need to be spend for fuel over the course of 10000 miles. If that is a problem then someone need to shop elsewhere. The topic has been beaten to death already. It was once almost $100.000 car. Maintenance cost still reflects this. Front rotor price is idiotic as well. Nothing we can do about it. Just swallow a pill like a man and stop crying about headbolts brakes.

I hope this video helps with picking a good E63.

You can also find the video on the same channel where I changed my head bolts and showed their condition, as well as my take on how over exaggerated these issues are.

Believe or not, both cars have their own issues. Both engine related and not.

One should not worry about head bolt failure until it shows signs - in my mind. If one is loosing their sleep because of the internet exaggerating the failure rate then either replace them using the video below or info on this forum, or pay someone to do it. The parts cost less than $300. It takes 10-12 hours of labor. So it should not cost more than $1500 to get it replaced one by one, at least over here in Boston. I will take a healthy E63 over E55.

CLS is the same car but uglier and it breaks window regulators.

For the 1000th time. The whole head bolt issue, has been well documented as an over exaggeration. Probably 95% of the E63 owners, that have changed their head bolts, realized after they removed their old headbolts, that they were in decent shape and really didn’t need replacing. They like me surrendered to the hype from online forums from those that never had or owned an E63. I will say this no matter what you go with either it be an E55/C63/E63 or CLS63 they all will require some form of maintenance, so your going to spend money no matter what. And these cars are getting older every day, so more money will need to be spent to maintain them. That just the fact of the matter.

front rotors are NOT terribly expensive at all compared to other same high profile sport/lux sedans. E63 oem rotors are $98/ea on pelicanparts or $75 on other MB online parts stores.

$98 for the two piece OEM cannot be true.

the oem part number shows 211-423-11-12; is that two piece? I don't know; just going off the factory oem part number. I haven't needed breaks yet in my two years of ownership

The cheapest OEM I have seen is the brembo kit for about $1000. Luckily one can retrofit C63 single piece rotors to save money. In day to day no difference can be felt. But if you’re racing you should consider two-piece rotors.

just going off the oem part number; like I said I don't know if that's two piece; but please let me know if you find out.

I do see a different Brembo option for fronts for $300 each on Rockauto; and yes have also seen complete kits for all 4 corners for $1k; I've even shared that.

I purchased my brakes for roughly $1K, the two piece Brembo front rotors and the Pagid Rear rotors, along with carbon-ceramic pads and wear sensors after an extensive search to piece-meal this all together.
I do believe that the C63 rotors might be a hair smaller in diameter but not quite sure. I do know that the Brembo Rotors are 360MM in diameter and 36MM thick and the rears are 330MM x 26MM

I just bought the front rotors from rockauto for the $300 a piece. Was able to use a 5% off coupon as well so that saved me a few more dollars. While the brakes are more expensive then most other cars I don’t think $300 a piece is really a crazy amount of money for 2-piece rotors. The brake pads were pretty expensive though Lol
